Greater Shepparton will have a new mayor within the next month after Shane Sali stepped down on Monday, September 7 following his endorsement from the National Party.
City of Greater Shepparton councillors will vote on a new mayor within the next month in accordance with the Local Government Act.
Mr Sali has chosen to not receive his salary during his leave of absence as a councillor.
He said serving as mayor was one of the greatest privileges of his life and he thanked the Greater Shepparton community for placing its trust in him.
“I leave the role enormously grateful for the opportunity I was given, proud of what we achieved and even more determined to keep fighting for the region and the people I love,” Mr Sali said.
While he acknowledged a broad range of achievements from his time in office, Mr Sali said the response to the floods of October 2022 would always stay with him.
He said it was a privilege to work alongside so many volunteers from the community at a time when he was just three months into his role as mayor.
He looked forward to working with council as a state candidate and wished the next mayor “all the best in representing Greater Shepparton”.
