More than 40 environmentally-friendly musicians will take part in a free Girgarre concert led by renowned artist Graeme Leak.
On Sunday, April 28, the Girgarre Soundshell will be rocked by the Junkestra – an orchestra of regional residents playing instruments made of recycled materials.
Before the concert, Mr Leak, a musician, composer, and instrument maker based in Scotland, will train the orchestra to harmonious perfection.
Mr Leak said that musicians have travelled from all over rural Victoria to play in the Junkestra in Girgarre.
“There are others who watched on before, who are now determined not to miss out this time around,” he said.
“One couple is travelling from Albury ... about 10 have never played anything before.’’
Mr Leak highlighted one of the instruments to be featured in the concert — the string can, which is just one string tied across the opening of a can and set to one guitar string’s vibration.
“Six people just keeping the beat and plucking their one string sounds like someone strumming a guitar,’’ he said.
“People amaze themselves with what they can do.’’
Junkestra was formed in 2018 under the creative direction of Mr Leak with the participation and collaboration of local Girgarre residents.
The concert organisers encourage attendees to bring a jacket or blanket as the outdoor weather may be chilly for some.
