The YMBA All Abilities Basketball program gives people of all abilities the chance to play, compete, and gain confidence both on and off the court.
Coach Kayla Oughton, one of four volunteer coaches along with Neil and Emily Walker and Gail Brooks, recalls the moment it all began.
“I used to chat with a client about my kids playing basketball, and she said, ‘I wish my son could play, he’s an incredible shooter’,” Kayla said.
“That comment stuck with me, and I went home that day and thought, ‘why can’t he play?’.”
From that spark, the program was born and what started as a small outdoor initiative quickly gained momentum, with the Yarrawonga Basketball Association providing court hire and support.
Today, the team includes nine players of varying abilities and ages, from 15 to 68.
Each session is filled with laughter, learning, and the joy of playing basketball.
“We’ve got players with all different abilities,” Kayla said.
“Some were hesitant to dribble or run with the ball at first, and now they’re confidently defending, taking the ball off opponents, and shooting from all over the court.
“The confidence they’ve built is incredible.”
The program’s impact stretches far beyond basketball with players trying new sports, gaining independence, and stepping into the wider community with pride.
“It’s not just about the game,” Kayla said.
“It’s about building confidence in life; seeing them try something new, push themselves, and grow. That’s the most rewarding part.”
Matt, 23, joined after enjoying the sessions so much that he tried out for a Shepparton team, discovering new ambition and skill.
At 44, Casey is a national-level swimmer, and found friendship and joy in being part of the team.
The YMBA All Abilities players have competed in closely contested games against the Benalla Breakers, narrowly missing victory but leaving the court with proud families cheering from the stands.
“It’s amazing to watch them grow,” Kayla said.
“From where they were two years ago to the confident basketball players they are now just fills your heart.
“And it gives them something they carry into every part of their lives.”
Each eight-week season focuses on skill-building, teamwork, and fun in a program that creates a welcoming space where everyone, regardless of ability, feels included and celebrated.
With plans to enter all abilities tournaments later this year and pathways for players to progress into other teams, the program continues to grow, powered by passionate volunteers, supportive families, and the belief that sport should truly be for everyone.
“That one comment from a client is what started it all,” Kayla said.
“And seeing what it’s become is the best part of all.”
The 8-week training program started in February at the MPR, Sacred Heart College.
