Earlier this year a group of four students from grades three to five, who named themselves and their work the JETS (Junior Entrepreneurs of Tungamah School) was created to raise money for numerous groups and organisations.
The JETS (Nate Dickins and Matt Weaver - grade five, Poppy Cooper - grade four and Zade Ussher - grade three) raised the money through various means for the Ronald McDonald House, Turkish Earthquake victims and for their school.
The JETS determined which organisations to donate to, and then worked on fundraisers.
“We picked Ronald McDonald House because I know someone in there and it helps so they don’t have to stay in a hotel while family is having treatment,” Nate said.
“We may also raise some money for the rain swept Brisbane and Gold Coast just to help some people and raise money for our town, for more things for the town,” Matt said.
When asked what they loved most about being a part of the JETS, all the students were of the same consensus.
“Getting to raise money for people, especially those that need a little more help,” Poppy said.
“It’s good to know we’ve helped others and I like being a part of the JETS to help,” Zade said.
So far these amazing students, who have worked with teacher Mrs Kathy Elliot, have raised around $600, maybe more.
The fundraisers they ran have been a Callipo icypole day, a crazy hair day, a calendar fundraiser and a Beyblade competition.
The JETS led the organisation and then recruited teams from the rest of the class to help with the work.
The vision for this group was to engage students after a tough year, to develop financial literacy skills, and to provide opportunities to use creative and critical thinking skill of which the students involved in the JETS were.
Recently the prep to year two students also went to the Tungamah Police Station and helped decorate the fence and Christmas tree.
Leading Senior Constable Scott Miller rewarded them with an icy pole treat to thank them for their work. They also had a play at the Tungamah Kindergarten on the way back to school.
