Hoping to consolidate its place in the top two, Mulwala was thrashed by Cobram who were trying to stay in touch with the top teams in the competition.
The result, 20.15.135 to 7.9.51 was far from the contest everyone was expecting.
Early in the first term the football was locked in many scrimmages and packs with both sides struggling to break free. But Cobram was soon able to use their slick handball and leg speed to break the dead lock, hitting the scoreboard on multiple occasions. Mulwala was struggling to set up quality entries into their forward line and Cobram was able to take full toll from these costly turn overs.
Cobram was maintaining possession and hitting targets all over the ground, which had Mulwala on the back foot and made them appear slow. A five goal first term by a rampant Cobram team set the tone for the day. In comparison Mulwala’s limited opportunities of three set shots resulted in points only when goals were needed desperately. This was Mulwala’s first goalless first term for the season.
Mulwala’s backline was under constant pressure and Bodhi Butts was working over-time to repel Cobram. He was getting support from Lewis Taylor, Josh Hammond and Glenn Dominick, but the weight of numbers meant Cobram was able to continue hitting the score board.
A lift was needed in the mid-field and it was led by Jack Sutherland with Rhys Moylan and Sean Johns helping to get the Lions back into the contest, but it was getting to be a long way back. Mulwala’s skill errors heading through the mid-field continued to prove costly as Cobram continued to build their lead.
Tanner Nyholm was one of the young Lions who continued to help stem the tide but the weight of numbers was in Cobram’s favour as they ran riot. Cobram’s ability to transition the ball from end to end without a Mulwala player touching the ball was a serious concern to the coaching team.
The margin continued to build throughout the second half with Cobram’s multiple avenues to goal allowing them to keep the score board ticking over. Mulwala was struggling to hit targets inside the forward fifty as scoring became a real challenge.
Each time Mulwala was able to kick a goal Cobram had the capacity to respond quickly, sometimes with multiple goals.
The soft tissue injury curse continued to impact on the Mulwala group with Rohan Davies, Glenn Dominick and Rhys Moylan all heading to the pine, unable to take any further part in the demolition. Cobram on the other hand continued to run and spread with the same speed as early in the game, which made any chance of a fight back impossible.
In the end Cobram had set up a very dominant win, in what was a credit to their young playing group and a disappointing loss for Mulwala. Mulwala will now need to reassess their options and focus on preparing for their round eight class with Finley.
