Just before midday today the CFA confirmed there were five small fires burning within the Cobram Track area.
“Firefighters have contained four of these fires with mineral earth breaks,” the latest updates states.
“There are high winds expected during the course of the day, which may impact the smoke visibility and fire activity.
“There is currently no threat to you, but you should stay informed and plan for what you will do if the situation changes.”
Update, 11.20am:
Tocumwal and Barooga NSW Rural Fire Service firefighters have been stood down from the Koonoomoo blaze.
The local firefighters spent 2.5 hours assisting the CFA this morning with “blackening out”.
With at least 30 CFA tankers and CFA aerial support working on the blaze, the NSW-based firefighters were stood down.
The CFA is continuing to extinguish the blaze.
A formal update in expected by 12.30pm today, or as the situation changes.
Earlier, 11am:
Southern Riverina residents are advised that smoke may be visible from Tocumwal as a result of a bush fire at Koonoomoo this morning.
Several fires were discovered in the Cobram Track area of the River Murray Reserve just after 8am this morning.
The Victorian Country Fire Authority has requested assistance form the NSW Rural Fire Service, with Tocumwal and Barooga brigades among those on scene this morning.
The size of the fire has not yet been confirmed, and is listed as “not yet under control” but “contained within the area”.
NSW RFS Federation Group Captain Greyd’n Davis said while there is no direct threat to communities at this stage, firefighters are keeping a close eye on the weather conditions.
He said rough weather is predicted for later today, and so he encourages locals to keep a close eye on the Vic Emergency incidents and warnings page for updates throughout the day.
The CFA expects to have an update on the fire by 12.30pm, or if the situation changes before.
“There is currently no threat to you, but you should stay informed and plan for what you will do if the situation changes,” the CFA said.
