The track which snakes its way along Spring Drive and will feature a 200-metre boardwalk over Lake Mulwala near Drain Lane, has commenced with some sections cleared and ready for pavement to start being delivered and compacted.
It is being constructed in stages to allow the precise alignment to be “micro-sited” amongst existing large trees, drainage features and other existing infrastructure.
The 200m long boardwalk near Drain Lane tender closed on February 26 with eight proposals received. Tenders are being evaluated with the successful tenderer being announced after Federation Council’s March meeting.
Construction of the boardwalk is expected to be completed around October 2021. The path construction itself is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
“It is great news for our Wednesday Cycle group, of which we have up to sixteen members at times enjoying rides around our area and sometimes beyond,” group member David Jobson told The Yarrawonga Chronicle.
“Our thanks to Federation Council for starting this project and we hope the process can be speeded up to ensure a completion sometime later this year.”
Known as WCG (Wednesday Cycle Group), members met with the principal of the group who have designed the project. “We discussed the route, signage and general issues that can pop up with something like this,” David said.
“It will include a 200-metre cycle bridge across a portion of the lake near Drain Lane closer to Mulwala. So, all speed ahead, and we are excited!”
On the other side of the river, Moira Shire Council spokesperson said the Yarrawonga to Burramine track is progressing well with many differing aspects of the plans currently in the pipeline.
“Meetings and discussions with all key stakeholders (neighbouring residents and local businesses, Regional Roads Victoria, Parks Vic, Powercor, Goulburn Murray Water, Murray River Tourism, Federation Council) have occurred with all indicating support for the project and the CHMP (Cultural Heritage Management Plan) complete and with the RAP for approval,” a Moira Shire spokesperson confirmed.
“A Native Vegetation assessment has also been completed with the planning application in the final stages of preparation, a Project Manager has been appointed – EDA Project Management and detailed design RFQ (request for quotation) documents are being prepared.”
Moira Shire Council is aware that there are sections of the community who strongly support a Yarrawonga to Bundalong trail and is currently one of many projects being discussed in preparation for the draft 2021/22 budget.
