Andrew Patterson, 54, has stepped into the role of chief executive officer, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for the vital role clubs play in regional towns.
When he’s not at the club, you’ll likely spot Andrew out and about, having a hit at the Yarrawonga Tennis Club, working on his golf handicap, and supporting both the Yarrawonga Pigeons and Mulwala Lions football clubs.
But when it comes to the AFL, Andrew is a Kangaroo through and through, his heart in North Melbourne.
With Anzac Day approaching, the new chief is also reflecting on his family’s deep history of service; a legacy that spans generations.
His father served in the CMF during the Vietnam War, his grandfather was a Petty Officer in WWII on the HMAS Sydney, N-Class Destroyers, and HMAS Macquarie, and his great-grandfathers served on the Western Front and Mediterranean during WWI.
He even has a direct descendant who was wounded at the Battle of Waterloo.
Born and raised in Sydney, Andrew is a 30-year veteran of the club industry.
His journey began in 1996 as finance manager at Wagga RSL Club, followed by stints in Goulburn, Canberra, and Sydney.
For the past 11 years, Andrew has been in Melbourne serving as CEO for various club groups, but the pull of this community, and a nudge from some industry mates, brought him to Mulwala.
“The role was recommended to me by several colleagues,” Andrew said.
“I was particularly drawn to ClubMulwala’s financial position, its commitment to further capital works program, as well as the stability and professionalism of the board of directors.”
But it not just about the books and the bottom line for Andrew who is a firm believer that a club is only as good as the community it serves.
He defines success not just by facilities, but by a club's relevance to its members and its contribution to the wider local area.
“Whether that be sport, hosting milestone events, providing an enjoyable meal or acting as a meeting place for family and friends, our clubs play a vital role in our community and bring people together,” he said.
Andrew has relocated from Melbourne with his wife, Oriana, and already the couple has been touched by the local hospitality.
“I just wanted to take a moment to say a sincere thank you for the warm and friendly welcome we have received,” Andrew said.
“Your support, openness, and willingness to help have made my first days here truly enjoyable.”
Chairman of the ClubMulwala board, Des O’Meara said Andrew had already proven to be a breath of fresh air in the club and was a very welcome person to head the management team.
“Andrew is very user-friendly and already he’s been around all the staff and touched base with most of them,” Des said.
“It’s a credit to the way he’s approached the job; he’s fitted in very well.”
