This year, they celebrate Men’s Shed Association Week along with 50,000 men around Australia who walk through the doors of more than 1,200 sheds every week.
Building Healthy Communities is this year’s theme, with the movement striving to strengthen communities one project and one conversation at a time, fostering community spirit, creating social connections, and strengthening local networks.
Corowa Men’s Shed project chairman Lynn Fredericks said the shed was about fostering positive companionship for males across the region.
“Men can come here and work on their own projects if they so desire but principally, what we are about is men, having the ability to come out here and congregate,” Lynn said.
“For men to come in and sit around, have a coffee and a chat; it’s about their own mental health essentially.”
Secretary Graeme Withers said the shed’s motto was for men to do as much or as little as they want, in their own time for the community and themselves.
“We do things mainly for women who live by themselves such as fence fixing, gate fixing, whatever it may be,” he said.
“There’s a lot of little jobs around the town that we do that people need done.”
According to the Australian Men’s Shed Association, www.mensshed.org, more than 50,000 Australian men participate in Men’s Sheds.
The Corowa Community Men’s Shed is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00am till 12:00pm.
