Various local awards will be announced, including citizen of the year, community organisation of the year and project and event of the year.
Some people will also be recognised with honours under the Order of Australia; these awards are only announced twice a year, on Australia Day and the King’s Birthday.
The process from nomination to award can take place over many years and there are various levels.
The Order of Australia was formally established in 1975, celebrating its 50th anniversary last year.
There are various levels, first the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and Companion of the Order (AC).
OAM Peter Sutton said recipients came from all walks of life.
“They can be elite sportsmen, celebrities, business owners, people from the arts or community volunteers,” Mr Sutton said.
“In my experience, most are genuinely humble when receiving the honour.”
Mr Sutton said that some recipients chose to join the Order of Australia Association.
“The association seeks to encourage further nominations under the Order of Australia and greater awareness,” he said.
“It has also established a foundation, which provides scholarships to outstanding young students.”
Last year a number of locals were honoured, including Anna Creighton, Joan Jordan, Malcolm Sanders, Peter McManus, Stanley Sullivan, Lesley Harrison, Murray Haynes and Glennis Pohlner.
Any member of the community can nominate another. This can be done online, and the nominator can provide up to six referees who can comment.
