More than 4000 people passed through the gates of Puckapunyal Military Area on Saturday, March 14, marking the Australian Army’s 125th anniversary.

Inside, visitors gained an insight into army life on the base, with the latest equipment and demonstrations wowing the crowds.
Paying homage to Victoria Cross recipient Keith Payne and his wife Florence, who have been visiting the region for the past week with family and friends, was the Payne of Valour art exhibit — a celebration of the pair’s enduring contribution to veterans, families and communities.

During the open day, the annual National Servicemen’s Association of Australia march was also held, and a plaque was unveiled by the Victorian Branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, honouring national servicemen trained at 2nd Recruit Training Battalion between 1965 and 1972.
The Puckapunyal event was one of many open days held at bases across Australia, offering visitors the chance to connect with their local soldiers and celebrate the 125 years of service to the nation.

“Army 125 Open Day is a celebration of our people — past, present and future — and the enduring contribution they make to the Australian Army,” army chief Lieutenant General Simon Stuart said.
“These events provide Australians with a unique opportunity to witness the professionalism, dedication and adaptability of their army and to learn more about the meaningful roles our personnel perform every day in service to the nation.
“We are proud to open our gates and share our story with the Australian public.”
