Edith “Edie” Fuhrmann, of Nagambie, celebrated that special event on Saturday, February 17, with a large crowd of family and friends at the Tahbilk Estate restaurant.
The previous day, State Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland attended a celebratory lunch at the Nagambie Hostel and wished Edie all the best for her special day.
On January 30, 1943, Edith Mary Elizabeth Comi, lovingly known as Edie, married young soldier Robert Fuhrmann at Nagambie’s St Malachy’s Catholic Church.
They were blessed with 10 children after Bob returned home from his army service in Papua New Guinea.
Peter, Anthony, John, Julian, Kristine, Adrian, Karen, Gerard, Maryanne and Vincent were all born at the Nagambie Bush Nursing Hospital in Church St, Nagambie.
Sadly, Julian passed away in 2010.
The family lived in the home Bob built near the school in Nagambie. Bob and Edie were a faithful pair at St Malachy’s and their children attended St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School over the road.
The couple was married for 71 years and was involved with the community, church, school, and the RSL, before Bob passed away in 2015.
Edie moved into the Nagambie Lakeview Lodge Hostel and has been well looked after there for many years by the caring, loyal staff and volunteers.
Nine of Edie’s children attended her party with their partners and some of the four generations of her family, which includes 29 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Happy Birthday was sung most heartily to the centenarian after she cut her 100th birthday cake.
On the table with her cake were cards of congratulations from King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Governor-General David Hurley and his wife Linda, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Federal MP Matthew Keogh and State Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell.
Congratulations, Edie, on reaching this wonderful achievement, from your family, friends and community.
