Friends of Chinaman’s Island Nature Reserve (FOCINR) hosted an information day for representatives of the various organisations which have been involved with Chinaman’s Island on Tuesday, September 17.
The attendees, along with representatives of the Moira Shire and Goulburn Murray Water, officially unveiled 10 new information signs on the island.
An audience of around 30 people enjoyed learning about wetlands and the island from two guest speakers.
The first speaker was Jane White of Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group.
Ms White gave an interesting presentation on the importance of wetlands and outlined some of the work that is being done to preserve them.
The group then walked around the island, while Grant Allen of Park Lane Nurseries in Wangaratta shared some of his encyclopaedic knowledge of the native flora on the Island.
At Wrights Lookout, Moira Shire Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM planted a red gum tree as a symbolic gesture to mark the unveiling of the signs.
Dr Emonson congratulated all those who have been involved in restoring Chinaman’s Island’s environment.
The tree was donated by Grant Allen, along with more than 70 grasses and trees, which the FOCINR volunteers and the guests enthusiastically planted on the north side of the island.
The FOCINR will nurture these new plants and continue its work to ensure the island remains a remarkable walking track that is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
New volunteers are always welcome to join the Friday morning working bees, and interested people can call Bruce McKean on 5743 1091 or Shaun Quinn on 0439 623 416
