The store marked its first anniversary on September 11, 12 months after opening in the former Rivers premises.
Store manager, Becky Johnston and Northern Regional Salvo Stores area manager, Andrea Menzies said the response from Yarrawonga had been wonderful.
“I think the town has really welcomed us,” Andrea said.
“We’ve had lots of positive feedback and, even though there are quite a few op shops in town, there was definitely room for another one.”
During its first year, the store generated a surplus of about $60,000, with funds going to Salvation Army programs that help people experiencing hardship, homelessness and domestic violence, along with food relief and other community services.
A further $1,297 was raised through the Christmas Plate Appeal and $1,159 through the Red Shield Appeal.
The store is becoming a point of connection for people needing help, with information about local services available and donated food offered free to anyone who needs it, with no judgement.
But after a successful first year, Becky has one very important item on her wish list for year two, more volunteers.
The store has just six volunteers, and Becky would love to triple that number.
There are roles to suit almost everyone, from sorting books, jewellery, toys and clothing to pricing stock, helping on the shop floor or putting previous retail experience to good use.
No experience is necessary, and training is provided.
“You can give us an hour, a day or two days, whatever works around you,” Becky said.
“If you want to be the jewellery queen, you can be the jewellery queen.”
Volunteering can also provide something equally valuable, friendship and connection.
For retirees, newcomers to Yarrawonga or anyone wanting to get out, meet people and become part of the community, the store is relaxed and friendly.
“There are probably more cups of tea and biscuits eaten than books sorted,” Andrea joked.
“We have a lot of fun.”
Donations remain vital, with good-quality clothing, furniture, homewares, books, toys and jewellery always needed.
Looking ahead, Andrea sees enormous potential for the Yarrawonga store.

“Come in and say hi, have a conversation, we’d love to have you.” Becky said.
