O’Neill is only the second person to be inducted into ‘Legend Status’ at the club, following Brant ‘Brutus’ Ryan, who received the award when it was first introduced in 2021.
The MWSC Legend Award recognises members who have demonstrated exceptional achievement, long-term dedication, and significant contribution to the sport, while representing the club with distinction over many years.
The club’s board approved Pete’s nomination at its March monthly meeting, recognising his outstanding contribution to water skiing, his dedication to developing local junior skiers, and his service to both the club and the wider community.
Mulwala Water Ski Club president, Matt Holgate, said Pete’s contribution to the club and the sport is truly exceptional.
“His achievements on the world stage, together with his commitment to our club, our community, and his passion for developing junior skiers, make him a thoroughly deserving recipient of Legend Status,” Mr Holgate said.
“Pete embodies everything the Mulwala Water Ski Club stands for.”
Pete O’Neill was inducted into the Waterski & Wakeboard Australia Hall of Fame. Pete is pictured here with host Mark Beretta at the Hall of Fame celebrations.
Humbled and extremely honoured, Pete paid particular homage to former club CEO Tim Levesque and the club’s team members.
“I look back and I am astounded at the faith Tim Levesque put in me as a 19-year-old.
“Don’t get me wrong all I had to do was take people skiing and run the show but Tim saw something in me I didn’t see for years to come.
“I was in the deep end, but our club has great people. The previous ski coordinator Mark Robinson had been training me for the previous year without me realising it.
“Brutis and Kathy Ryan became great friends as they mentored me over those first years and to this day have been the backbone of our ski show.
“Dave Ryan offered me whatever help I needed and I needed an announcer; he did that job for over 20 years.”
Pete said that over the years he had been privileged to be helped along the way.
“From the early days of moving to a new town and being welcomed into the waterski family by our members like Robbie Knowles who became life-long friends to Lenny Langford’s guidance as president steering me in the right direction.
“The Mulwala Water Ski Club is an incredible place and an even better community.
“To be considered as a legend beside Brutis Ryan is something I am not sure I can wrap my head around. I am honoured and forever grateful.”
Pete’s career spans more than three decades at the highest levels of barefoot water skiing, with remarkable success both nationally and internationally.
A ten-time Australian Open Men’s Champion, he has represented Australia on numerous occasions, securing multiple medals at World Championships, including gold and silver team performances.
His achievements extend beyond individual competition. Peter has been an integral member of the Mulwala Water Ski Club throughout his career, proudly representing the club internationally while contributing to its reputation as a premier destination for water skiing excellence.
He has also played a pivotal role in the club’s renowned show-ski program. As a skier, driver, announcer, coach and co-show director, he has contributed to more than 30 ski shows at local, national and international levels.
His involvement has helped secure multiple national gold medals and international podium finishes, including World Championship success.
Most importantly, Peter has been a mentor, leader and ambassador for the sport, dedicating his time to coaching, organising events and developing the next generation of skiers.
His passion, professionalism and commitment have had a lasting impact on countless young people, as well as the club and the broader water-skiing community.
In March this year, Peter was inducted into the Waterski & Wakeboard Australia Hall of Fame, recognising his long participation and commitment to the sport.
Club CEO Greg Roberts said Pete is a wonderful ambassador for both the sport and the club.
“His influence has been felt across generations of skiers, from those taking their first steps as juniors through to athletes competing at the highest level,” Mr Roberts said.
“The time, care and knowledge he has invested in people has had a profound impact on so many lives, both on and off the water.”
Peter O’Neill exemplifies the qualities of the MWSC Legend Award in every respect. His induction ensures his legacy will be permanently recognised and celebrated, inspiring future generations of members and athletes.
