After several setbacks, the opening marks an exciting milestone for the community, offering a free and accessible water play space for all to enjoy.
Moira Shire invites residents and visitors to come and experience the new park and make fun and lasting summer memories for years to come.
Replacing the old water slide, the expanded Yarrawonga Splash Park is now three times larger, offering an extensive water play area featuring over 20 interactive water equipment pieces. Operating from November to April, the splash park will be open daily from 9am to 9pm, with the possibility of extending these hours based on demand.
Between these hours, the water will be switched on underground with activating the water features being as simple as touching the green centre pad of the bollard activators, located on both sides of the splash park.
Once activated, the water will run for a 15-minute session before requiring reactivation.
Moira Shire Council Project Manager Adele Leathem and Manager Parks, Recreation and Facilities Mark Lambourn are excited to see how the park is received heading into the warmer months.
“Some of the older objects were given a refresh and were moved but everything on the two left sections are new,” Ms Leathem said.
“We missed the last summer as the old park was closed on labour day in 2022 but we are really looking forward to this summer and seeing the new park being used.
“We are looking to make the whole area more family friendly as we are also looking to move the bins that are close to the rotunda to another area.
“The park bench seating and planter boxes are almost like having a fence, hopefully deterring young children from going any further towards the lake whilst also providing seating in the sun for family members and a slight garden like feature,” Mr Lambourn said.
Moira Shire Chair of Administrators John Tanner AM and new Acting CEO Michael Tudball joined by Evie, Lily and Macy Robinson, Ned Ferguson and Moira Shire Recreational Development Project Support Officer Lucy Lykissas at the opening of the Yarrawonga Splash Park.
“The shed, which houses all of the pipes and machines with a tank underneath, allows the feature to operate and needed to be in close proximity, therefore lies close to the new park.
“Although we had a few hiccups in the timeframe of the project finally being completed, it has been delivered in the scope of the works.
“We are considering what else we can do into the future with this great area.
“This splash park is here for all, for the young and young at heart. We can’t wait to see it going off in the summer.”
Moira Shire Council Panel of Administrators Chair John Tanner AM also expressed his excitement for the project.
“It gives me great pleasure to witness the completion of the Yarrawonga Splash Park, a project that shows our commitment to providing great recreational facilities for our community,” Mr Tanner said. “This expansion not only enhances the water play space but also promotes inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that everyone can enjoy this fantastic facility. It also compliments the playground, making this a drawcard for families.
“It is important to thank Adele Leathem for all of her hard work in getting this project complete.
“Thank you for your patience and seeing the project through.
“It is well worth the wait!”
Moira Shire Council remains committed to continuously enhancing the splash park’s amenities based on community needs.
Throughout the summer season, council will closely monitor the usage and assess the requirement for additional seating, shade structures, and other amenities.
