The day offers an opportunity to promote awareness and inclusion for the local disability community, with people with disabilities not only at the centre of the event but also leading it.
A major highlight of the day will be an address from guest speaker Martyn Lawrence.
Born and raised in Echuca, Mr Lawrence has lived with cerebral palsy since birth and has been a strong advocate for not letting disability define people.
With a strong sense of humour and an infectious personality, Mr Lawrence has often travelled throughout the region to speak at schools and various events about his story.
At the IDPwD event, Mr Lawrence said during his address he would focus on how people could be leaders in their own lives.
“I’ve done various things like this before, but not for a while, so it’s good to get back into it,” he said.
“What I’m going to focus on mainly is, (how) we can all be leaders in our own way. We don’t have to be the politicians down in Canberra or the people you see — we can all lead in our own way, just maybe not visibly.”
Mr Lawrence said the celebration of IDPwD served as a reminder to recognise and support people with disabilities every day, not just once a year.
“I think we need more awareness of it because I didn’t even probably realise it was a thing till I was a teenager myself,” he said.
“I think it’s important, but also to remember it’s not just a one-day thing as well.”
Vivid’s Josh Cheap and Joel Awty will also play a central role on the day as they share the role of MC.
Guests can look forward to a fun day, with stalls by disability support service providers, a barbecue lunch and ice-cream to enjoy.
The event will be held at the Echuca Recreation Reserve on Tuesday, December 2 from 10am to 1pm.
