The results of the Australian Road Assessment Program are now available, rating the risk profile of a road on a five-star scale and giving the public and government an insight into priorities for addressing road safety.
In Moira Shire, the most risky road, as rated by AusRAP, is a section of the Murray Valley Hwy between Yalca and the Mathers Rd intersection.
This section of road earned a rating of 1.6 out of five stars.
Meanwhile, the second most risky section of road in the shire was the section of the Murray Valley Hwy at the Picola North Rd bend, heading towards Nathalia from Cobram, with a rating of 1.7 stars.
Roads closer to Cobram fared just as poorly, with the Cobram South Rd between the Murray Valley Hwy outside Cobram and the Benalla-Tocumwal Rd earning a rating of 1.8 stars.
The least risky road was the Cobram-Koonoomoo Rd, with a rating of 3.3 stars.
Interestingly, the sections of the Murray Valley Hwy on the west and east sides of Strathmerton, infamous for its potholes, received scores of 2.9 and 2.5 stars, respectively.
RACV head of policy James Williams said each additional star rating halved the risk of deaths or serious crashes.
“We know that some roads are safer than others, and these star ratings give us the evidence to prove it,” he said.
