Road safety works under way in Benalla and district

Several roads and junctions in and around Benalla have been earmarked for upgrades, receiving a share of $210million from the Victorian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Streets Program.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes recently announced works funded through the program had begun – which is helping councils identify, plan and deliver projects that keep drivers, cyclists and pedestrians safe.

“The Safer Local Roads and Streets Program will deliver critical road upgrades on our local roads – providing safer outcomes for years to come,” Ms Symes said.

The successful local projects being funded include:

Tarnook Rd and Pagets Rd, Baddaginnie - Y-intersection removal/reconfiguration.
Clarke St and Waller St, Benalla - Raised intersection and raised priority crossing.
Martin Pl, Benson St and Thomas St, Benalla - Roundabout and raised priority crossings.
Harrys Creek Rd, Kithbrook to Violet Town - Speed limit reduction and safety improvements.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said the Victorian Government is allocating up to $2 million each to 79 councils across the state and will provide a wide range of safety improvements until June 30, 2027.

“Working alongside Victoria’s councils, we’re delivering important upgrades on local roads today, so our communities are safer into the future,” Ms Horne said.

Local government authorities own and operate 87 per cent of Victoria’s roads, and every year about 40 per cent of road trauma occurs on council-managed roads.

The Safer Local Roads and Streets Program is backed by the Victorian Government’s 2030 Road Safety Strategy targets – which aims to halve road deaths, reduce serious injury and ultimately achieve zero trauma by 2050.
