The Deniliquin Drover Rugby Union Club are not completely in recess, former members of the club, their families and friends all gather for touch rugby on a Thursday, and, the club hopes that actual games can be arranged throughout the season.
A big part of what the club tries to do on a Thursday night, playing touch rugby, is simply spreading awareness of the game and the club.
Since, there has been ongoing communication with the Southern Inland Rugby Union competition and their committee.
Their priority is to have a men’s senior team up and running, as it is the club's last competitive team.
But, they are also trying to garner interest in the youth space, hopefully trying to foster a passion for the game of rugby union and build numbers for the future of the club.
“The SIRU have been fantastic with what we’re trying to do with the club; very supportive of what we’re trying to do.
“And we’re always aiming to have a senior side, then hopefully build upon that for other teams - like females and juniors.” Pete said.
The Drovers Rugby Union Club also held their season launch on Thursday, bringing in former players, committee members and interested peoples.
Following the season launch, junior players from Deniliquin who travel to be able to play rugby with the Hay side will have their own season launch here in town, at Rotary Park.
The junior season launch will be on the Saturday, March 29 and will be kicking off at 10am.
A barbecue will be provided for the junior players who will be joined by their Hay teammates, as well as other committed juniors who travel from Barham to Hay for games.
As well as the barbecue, the juniors will be treated to a rugby clinic where they will get the opportunity to learn some key skills and important facades of the game from former Australian Wallabies player, James Holbeck.
In what will be the club's 40th anniversary, they hope to take to the field in some Southern Inland Rugby Union games this season, the league they formerly played in.
Whether the club can get games going or not throughout the year remains to be seen, but, if they have plenty coming up, and if you are interested in rugby union, the club invites you along to their touch rugby on Thursdays.
The club will continue to meet on a Thursday every week from 6pm, for about an hour of touch rugby, the club expects that in the lead up to potential games there will be organised training sessions in preparation.
