Sean’s scratch score of 80 off a 12 handicap edged out Dylan’s 84 for a nett 68 to claim the 38th annual McKee Classic title for 2019 on Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort’s Lake Course.
The brothers, who have played about a combined total of 500 senior games of football with Mulwala, paid tribute to “the great Brian McKee” who passed away in 2011, aged 60-years.
“I thank the McKee family for putting on this fantastic event,” 32-year-old laboratory worker Australian Munitions Mulwala employee said. Dylan, at least, beat his brother to reach 250 games for the Lions.
Prior to presentations, Greg Hope was “immensely proud” to propose a toast to his late, great mate, whom he described as “a great ideas man.”
The former accountant Hope was delighted to receive the most expensive trophy for the day – a dozen high quality Titleist golf balls - for the worst round of golf!
He built on his last year’s cricket score round of 123 to reach 138 off the stick. Going out by more strokes (23) than any other player, he won an excellent NAGA award.
It was barbecue cook extraordinaire ‘Redda’ Larkin’s 30th consecutive year at the controls, on the beautiful club resort terrace. Reflecting on his three decades, he reeled off three names who have shared the cooking duties.
‘Possum’, the man who subsequently gained OAM after his Robert Purtle name, was the first ‘helper’ – for one day. “I had to let him go. He talked too much,” Redda explained. “Smavitt served his apprenticeship but it got too hot in the kitchen and he left after five or six years.
“ ‘Defa’ (Robert Hamson) is in his second year and being a Western Bulldog supporter, could be a stayer.”
Redda and Defa perfectly cooked up a variety of delicious meat. The sweets by the golf club were first class. Just 24 players took to the fairways, the lowest number for many a year.
