The north-east Victorian region boasts consistent seasonal rainfalls and temperatures bringing with it an abundance of farm gate businesses with a passion of delivering fresh produce from paddock to plate.
One such business is Monichino Estate Wines which forms a big part of Sun Country Farm Gate Trail (see map on next pages).
Founder Carlo Monichino was a true pioneer of winemaking in the Gouburn Valley Wine Region. He first migrated to Australia from the renowned wine growing region of Piedmonte in the Asti region form Northern Italy in 1949, when he was just 18 years old. In 1962, his dream came to fruition at a property in Katunga where Carlo developed not only a vineyard, but a winery as well and created his well-known brand of unique Goulburn Valley Wines.
After years of hard work and dedication Carlo and Margaret opened the original cellar door and over the years they continued to grow new varieties and innovate.
Monichino Estate Wines now has 25 hectares under vines and currently produces approximately 10,000 dozen wines and in 2000 the winery had expanded enough to open a new cellar door big enough to hold the 27 varieties of wine made at the winery. The Winery is very much a family business with Anna Sergi (pictured) managing the sales and marketing with brother Terry as the Chief Winemaker.
Take a road of discovery while in the area and experience not only a feast tantalising your tastebuds but also your eyes.
Many concrete grain silos in the region have been transformed into amazing gigantic outdoor galleries, bringing to life small communities. Art works have been completed by renowned street artists with important themes depicting the local environment and history.
The Silo Art Trail can be completed in approximately 2-3 hours, however it may be longer if you really want to take in more around this region.
While on the trail you may also want to stop at some of the region’s fantastic producers on the Murray Farm Gate Trail.
The region offers an abundance of businesses with a passion for paddock to plate fresh produce on offer.
Take the time to explore all that is on offer and treat your tastebuds by sampling cheeses, wines, liqueurs, olives, oils, fruit, vegetables, beef, garlic, preserves and chocolate.
