Thanks to volunteers’ fundraising efforts, Cancer Council Victoria can provide free services to cancer patients — many of whom live locally.

According to Cancer Council Victoria, 364 people in Mitchell Shire are diagnosed with cancer each year.
The Seymour Group celebrates 40 years of volunteering for Cancer Council Victoria this year.
“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer,” group leader Margaret Sheppard said.
“We are looking for more members to keep our group viable in the future.”
Ms Sheppard reported on the Seymour Volunteer Group’s activities in 2023 at the recent annual general meeting.
“We were able to raise an amazing amount thanks to the efforts of our members and supporters,” Ms Sheppard said.
Treasurer Jan Fish presented the financial report and outlined last year’s successful fundraising events.
A total of $21,500 was sent to Cancer Council Victoria for cancer research, education and support services, thanks to the generosity of our district community.
Memorial research awards were donated in memory of seven residents last year.
This year, the group will have another fundraiser on Thursday, March 21, at the Senior Citizens Hall in Anzac Ave from 10am until noon.
The group is hosting a morning tea, with funds raised going to cancer research.
The morning will include tea, a trading table, raffles, lucky numbers and entertainment from the Goulburn Options Disability Services Key Word Signing Program.
The raffle will be drawn at the Bunnings Easter Night Market.
There will be a $10 entry fee, including a door prize ticket.
Commitment: Margaret Sheppard, Rosie Sheppard and Carol Smith were recognised for their long years of service in the organisation.
The group also elected new office bearers for 2024, which include group leader Margaret Sheppard, secretary Carol Smith and treasurer Janet Fish.
Three members received recognition for their service: Carol Smith, 20 years; and Margaret and Rosemary Sheppard, 10 years.
