Sadly, everybody knows someone who has had cancer, which is why people are being asked to share their story, to help make a difference and save lives.
Bowel cancer is the second biggest cause of cancer deaths in Australia, but if detected early, more than 90 per cent of bowel cancers can be successfully treated.
Bowel screening is one of the most effective ways to detect the early signs of bowel cancer, but only 42 per cent of eligible Victorians participate in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
Research shows having a real person at the heart of campaigns encourages others to do a bowel screening test and can start important conversations between loved ones.
Bowel cancer survivor Laurie shared his story in 2023 and told how the bowel screen test saved his life.
“I’ve seen my daughter graduate, celebrated 30 years of marriage with my wife and I’ve taken a road trip with my son. I can’t believe how much I would have missed if I hadn’t done the test,” Laurie said.
If you have a bowel cancer story, Cancer Council Victoria would like to hear it.
