It was a long day but a most enjoyable and successful day with the students joining 50 other signers, which included deaf and hard of hearing students, interpreters and signing conductors, for a full day of rehearsals for the big evening event.
After rehearsals, the students performed ‘Under the Southern Skies’ with a vocalist and ‘Candy Man’ with the entire student singing choir to a sellout concert.
The Primary Proms featured a Combined Primary Choir of 450 voices from Years 3 to 4 throughout NSW.
Mulwala Public School performed in concerts with outstanding instrumental and vocal items from public schools across the state.
The signing choir comprised 59 students from Year 4 to Year 12.
“Students have dedicated their lunchtimes of Terms 2 and 3 and an entire day of rehearsal on Wednesday 13th September to learning sign language to become part of the signing choir,” Mulwala teacher Michelle Rosmulder said.
“A huge thank you to the families of the students who drove, flew and caught the train to Sydney to ensure their child was able to perform.”
Mrs Rosmulder said she was once again honoured to be able to escort students to Sydney. “I’ve been blown away by the commitment shown by the students throughout the term,” she said.
“Students dedicated many hours of their own lunchtimes to learn the signs for each song. Wednesday’s rehearsal was long and tiring with many changes and our students were accommodating and enthusiastic for the whole day.”
This is the second year in which Mulwala Public School has presented its signing choir on the big Sydney stage. Last year, nine students competed in the school’s inaugural year.
