Sinkhole repairs already underway

Edward River Council has confirmed that repair works on a newly formed sinkhole at the corner of Cressy and Macauley Sts commenced on Wednesday morning, following a brief delay due to unsafe weather conditions.

The sinkhole was first announced via council’s Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon, alerting residents to the hazard and advising caution in the area.

The site has been fenced off with bollards and flashing lights, though both lanes remain open to traffic.

Drivers are urged to slow down and proceed carefully near the site.

Council said the rectification works are expected to be completed by today, provided no unforeseen challenges arise during the process.

In response to community concerns, council clarified that the Cressy/Macauley sinkhole is unrelated to a previous sinkhole on Harfleur St, which had prompted speculation that it may have reopened.

The current issue has been caused by a broken drainage pipe due to ground movement, whereas the Harfleur St sinkhole stemmed from different conditions.

Council also explained that sinkholes typically occur when underground infrastructure such as pipes are compromised, or when soil movement creates voids beneath the road surface, eventually leading to collapse.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert around the affected area and follow any signage or detours in place as crews work to restore the site safely.
