Former 13-years record-serving mayor of the previous Corowa Shire Gary Poidevin OAM of Corowa was with the group of six students and eight adults representing Federation Council-Miki City International Exchange Committee each day. Mulwala’s home-stay delegate of the Japanese group, Vivian Spilva OAM was also part of the big visit to the golf club resort.
The visit was part of a jam-packed overall tour of the Federation Council area, beginning with a morning visit to Corowa High School before an official welcome at the Corowa Civic Centre, at 11.00am last Wednesday.
A Collendina cultural walk and a Corowa High School Variety Night followed the official welcome.
A big welcome was extended to the visiting Japanese group of six students, eight adults and main chaperon Gary Poidevin OAM, Mulwala’s Vivian Spilva OAM and golf professional Sandy Jamieson.
“Students were welcomed everywhere, especially at Corowa High School at a Variety Night where the Japanese students performed,” Mr Poidevin told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
Thursday’s program comprised a tour of Urana sites, a visit to Coonong Station and wildlife park ahead of a Urana Waterfront Pavilion dinner.
“The people of Urana including the Holts welcomed the Japanese visit; the hospitality was wonderful,” Mr Poidevin said.
“On the way to Urana we stopped at Buaraja to see the Shearing of the Rams sculpture, at Daysdale the sculpture of the Working Framer and at Urana the windmill, the lizard and the spider.”
Mr Poidevin praised the two golf clubs for their hospitality, YMGCR and Corowa Golf Club where the documentary film launch took place.
“It was a fantastic week,” he said. “Chiaki (employee of the international exchange committee) spoke at the farewell.
“They believe the relationship between Federation Council and Miki City is wonderful and hope it continues for many, many years.”
