Moira Shire Council were forced to close the park due to reposts of slippery surfaces.
In a statement released by Moira Shire Council on Monday council ensured the community that they are working closely with the contractors to investigate the site and eliminate any risks and safety concerns.
“Prior to opening the park, a Slip Resistance Test was successfully completed, however we understand there were reports of slippery surfaces on the opening afternoon of Friday, November 3,” council’s statement read.
“In the interests of everyone’s safety, we made the decision to close the park so further inspections can take place and reduce the risk of a serious injury occurring.
“The Splash Park will remain closed at this moment of time, however council is working hard to reopen the park as soon as possible so everyone can enjoy the new facility this summer.”
People took to social media, outraged by the closure over the weekend, while Yarrawonga Mulwala bathed in glorious sunshine, welcoming thousands of visitors over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.
People commented on council’s Facebook page that the surface at the park was slippery, others commented that they were glad to see it closed quickly for safety reasons.
The splash park has suffered several setbacks since being earmarked to replace the much-loved but doomed Yarrawonga waterslide. An opening date was initially set almost a year later than expected after many delays in its construction.
The expanded Yarrawonga Splash Park offers an extensive water play area featuring over 20 interactive water equipment pieces.
The splash park, when re-opened, will operate daily from 9am to 9pm from November to April, with the possibility of extending hours based on demand.
