On Sunday, volunteers were called to an emergency when a large tree fell across the Riverina Highway, about 16km east of Deniliquin.
The fallen tree blocked the eastbound lane, causing a temporary hazard for passing motorists.
NSW SES Deniliquin-Conargo Commander Jodie Graham said upon arrival, they discovered a passerby had already made significant progress in clearing the tree from the road.
However, further action was required to ensure the area was safe.
“We appreciate the efforts of the passing motorist who helped clear the majority of the tree, but we still needed to address the large branches that were obstructing the area,” Commander Graham said.
“Our team was able to quickly clear the hazard, but it serves as a reminder of the potential risks as we enter the storm season.”
The storm season in NSW runs from September to April, and with severe weather events becoming more frequent, it’s important for residents to ensure their homes and properties are storm-ready.
The NSW SES is urging all residents to prepare for extreme weather conditions by securing loose objects, checking tree branches near homes, and ensuring gutters and drains are clear.
They have provided a storm guide to help individuals prepare for storms and reduce the risk of damage.
The guide includes important tips for emergency preparedness, including creating a plan, packing an emergency kit, and understanding flood risks.
Key storm preparation tips include:
• check your property: ensure trees near your home are healthy and well-maintained. Trim back any branches that may pose a risk to powerlines or structures;
• secure outdoor items: secure or store any outdoor furniture, garden tools, or other objects that could become airborne in high winds;
• prepare an emergency kit: keep a kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit; and
• stay informed: monitor weather reports and warnings, especially when storms are predicted in your area. Check the NSW SES website or download the Hazards Near Me app.
