Data released by the Institute of Public Affairs from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows Shepparton’s population grew by 1028 people between 2023 and 2025.
Behind that number lies a complex story.
Shepparton welcomed 2560 new overseas migrants during that period, while ‘natural increase’ (births minus deaths) added a further 556 residents.
But those gains were offset in the area of Australian internal migration, with a net loss of 2088 people.
Other regions in Victoria to experience a net loss from internal migration included Warrnambool and South West, and North West.
The regions of Latrobe - Gippsland, Bendigo, Ballarat and Hume, meanwhile, all saw a net increase from internal migration.
Across Victoria, including Melbourne, there was a net loss of 11,033 from internal migration, and a 374,936 gain from overseas migration.
Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, have the largest rate of migration, yet both have simultaneously seen a major net domestic loss.
