Des was well-known for surviving the 1942 battle of Savo Island as a 19-year-old sailor.
At 17, Des joined the Royal Australian Navy, making his way up the stoker ranks.
After leaving the Royal Australian Navy, Des spent much of his adult life as an electrical contractor, beginning and in partnership of JB Electrics.
Upon his 100th birthday, Des credited being well cared for and a great sense of humour as the key ingredients to reaching the huge milestone of 100 years of age.
To meet Des, even mere months ago, you would not have been aware he was a centenarian, still as sharp as a tack, making his way around town in his electric scooter.
On Anzac Day this year, Des was personally invited by former Governor-General and retired senior Army officer Peter Cosgrove to the 'Lest We Forget Harbour Sunset Tribute', an Anzac celebration held at the Sydney Opera House before he led the HMAS Canberra in the Sydney Anzac Day march.
Both were great honours to Des, which he told many locals about upon his return.
The Yarrawonga Mulwala RSL Sub-Branch was a much loved second home to Des while living in Yarrawonga with the sub-branch proud to have him as a long standing member.
Funeral details and an obituary will appear in an upcoming edition of the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
