“I’d been on a few motorbike runs and I’d seen a few ’57 Chevys and I loved the shape of them and thought I wouldn’t mind having one, and eventually one came up,” Mr Halton said.
Imported from Alabama eight years ago, the 65-year-old car still has its original motor and gearbox, with some minor restoration work done as well.
Mr Halton bought the car with the help of Peter Whitten from Echuca Performance. One of Mr Whitten’s contacts inspected the Chevy for Mr Halton, something he said was invaluable.
“Peter was unbelievable with what he did. You hear a lot of horror stories of people buying cars over there,“ Mr Halton said.
“It might have cost money to send him over there to inspect it but it was well worth it because the car was every bit as good as he said.
“Peter rang me once he inspected the car and he couldn’t believe how good it was.”
The Chevy is the first vintage car Mr Halton has owned, and he said it was great getting to take the car out for a spin.
“It’s great getting the car out and getting back to a simpler time, life is not that stressful,” he said.
Mr Halton and his ’57 Chevy have featured at every Rochester Motors and Music Fest so far, and they will be out there once again this weekend.
“It’s good catching up with some people you don’t see that often and they have some good bands playing too, it’s a good weekend for the town,” he said.
The two-day event will be held this weekend from 10am on Saturday and 8am on Sunday at the Hotel Rochester.
