This week the little Pigeons took on the undefeated Lavington team in the Preliminary finals of the Albury Wodonga Junior Football League.
The boys gave it their best effort, running hard at the footy, tackling strongly and moving the ball quickly at every opportunity.
However, the class of Lavington proved too strong for the boys, with Lavington running out comfortable winners.
This brings to an end a great year for the boys with them finishing second on the ladder.
A highlight of the season has been just how close knit the team is and how even a contribution there has been from so many different players.
Best players: Bhodi Leonard, Max Holgate, Levi Saunders, Baxter Donovan, Lucas Tonna, Sam Trembath.
Under 14s
Yarrawonga 11.8.74 defeatedWodonga Raiders Red 1.6.12.
Nerves and tensions were high as the young Pigeons travelled across to Wodonga to battle with Wodonga Raiders Red in a challenging preliminary final.
Emotions were quickly pushed aside as the ball bounced to start the game and Yarrawonga jumped out of the blocks kicking 2 quick goals through Darby Pendergast and Hunter Frauenfelder.
Momentum was with the Pigeons and Xavier Walker was dangerous deep in the forward line, finishing the quarter with another 2 goals.
With backs against the wall the Raiders boys came out firing, but the Pigeons accepted the challenge and an epic battle ensued for the second term.
As the ball was in constant dispute played primarily up and down the wings, both teams remained goalless in the 2nd quarter.
Liam Williams was dynamic creating a headache for the opposition as he continually put his head over the ball.
With a 4-goal lead at halftime, coach Hornet asked his leaders to lift.
Mac Pendergast was exceptional across half forward, pivotal in the Pigeons pushing into attack.
Beau Cummins dominated in the ruck giving plenty of supply to the midfielders.
Mitch Loughnan was everywhere racking up possessions and using the ball with elite skills on both sides of the body and hitting the scoreboard.
Hard work and persistence saw Hunter Frauenfelder, Mac Pendergast and Xavier Walker score goals in the third.
A 46-point lead heading into the last didn’t slow the boys down, as a place in next week’s grand final fuelled their appetite.
An all-round team performance helped the Pigeons book a spot in next week’s decider as they continued to share the ball around.
A hunger to want to win the footy showed as another 3 goals were scored in the last to Xavier Walker, Memphis Bramich and Jye Brennan.
Good luck next week.
