The YMCC A Grade has survived an early batting collapse in their two day encounter against Delatite at Lords Oval in Mansfield.
After losing the toss, the YMCC were sent into bat on a nice looking pitch.
Reid Clarke opened with Ben Irvine but Ben lasted 4 balls before being dismissed.
Clarke was joined by Corey McIntosh and they were able to combine for 33 runs before McIntosh fell for 15. The Lakers then lost 4 wickets for just 3 runs.
Angus McMillan joined Clarke and they progressed the score from 5 for 37 to 82 before McMillan fell for 22 and five runs later Clarke fell for a game high 44 runs.
At 7 for 87, things didn’t look good for the Lakers but the bottom order batted brilliantly and running between wickets was at a high standard.
Coach Brendan Lewis scored 22 and Matt McCabe 13 to see the YMCC at 9 for 133.
The final wicket stand between Brock McCabe and Jim Irvine took the Lakers final total to 197 with a 61 run partnership. McCabe was the final batsman out for 39 with Irvine scoring 31 not out.
With 11 overs left to play in the day, Jim Irvine took the new ball and caused immediate havoc with two wickets in consecutive balls that saw Delatite at 2 for 1 after the first over.
Irvine took 2 for 8, Angus McMillan had three maidens from three overs, Will Sharp had 0 for 10 off 3 overs and Corey McIntosh had two maidens in two overs.
The Lakers will trek back to Mansfield next week with 8 wickets needed and 179 runs to defend.
The A grade side wore black armbands in honour of Rita Poidevin whose sons all played cricket for the club.
A Reserve
A Reserve posted a massive score of 306 against Rutherglen United thanks largely to a Matt Casey sizzling century (127 not out) and Pat Martin solid 85.
After winning the toss there was no hesitation to bat with Zac Moore racing to 27 before going out LBW before both Brendan Hill and Lidgerwood departed with the score at 3 for 40.
The rescue mission was left to Casey and Jacob Bartlett who took the score to 62 before Bartlett departed.
Gary Browning showed a wise head contributing 26 with a 51 run partnership with Casey. Enter Martin who took little time getting his eye in, 8 after 2 balls. The pair attacked anything short the Rutherglen bowlers dished up with Casey hitting one of the biggest sixes ever seen at Vic Park.
The pair put on 139 stand until Martin tried one too many, his 85 coming off only 67 balls.
Casey along with young gun Jobe Kennedy 12 not out, closed the innings out with Casey a remarkable 127 not out
B Grade
The Lakers B Grade have come away with a commanding win in the last of their one-day games.
On a day better suited to cricket than previous weeks, the Lakers won the toss and elected to bat.
With the Mulwala deck coming onto the bat and the outfield in slick condition the Lakers got off to a flyer!
Sam Willett acquired another partner at the top of the order in Kyle Archibald and both punished anything short or loose. The pair put on 83 for the first wicket in a scintillating 9 overs. Willett contributing 19 before he was dismissed. Captain Mitch Collins-Bye joined Archibald for a 73 run third wicket partnership taking the score past the 150 mark.
Archibald falling 7 runs short of a century out for 93. Mitch Collins-Bye continued on making another half century finishing with 64. Bailey Fraunfelder was also handy with the willow in his debut for B Grade making 31 runs. The Lakers finishing on a mammoth 8/287 from their allotted 36 overs.
The Lakers then took to the field and started the dismantling of the Milawa bats. Cooper Bennett was sending them down with good pace. He and Rory Bartlett were bowling good line and length and not allowing the Milawa bats any width. Bennett struck in his second over and from there on the Lakers took charge and made the most of their opportunities to continually pressure the batsmen with good line and length.
The Lakers used five bowlers who all took at least one wicket with Jack Kennedy taking 3 wickets and Tom Hicks 2 to be the multiple wicket takers. In an impressive display in the field the Lakers had the Milawa side back in the pavilion for a total of 50. A commanding 237 run win.
This week the B Grade have the bye to prepare for the start of the two-day format.

With opening pair Caleb Mitchell and Rory Bartlett giving the batsmen nothing.
Josh McCabe claimed the first wicket and then they kept coming, eventually having them all out for 41. Congratulations to Jobe Kennedy who claimed 5/6 off 6 overs.
Under 14 Bulls
After losing the toss, Wangaratta Magpies sent the YMCC Bulls into bat.
Knowing that the team needed to make a strong start to be a chance against a quality side, TJ Docking and Jackson Purtell were sent in to open the innings and just like last week the openers were up to the challenge, keeping out the good balls and hitting the loose ones.
After a steady start TJ was run out for a well-made 11.
Jackson continued on his way until he was retired in the 14th over having done a great job at the top of the order.
Lachlan Phillips and Geoffrey Montgomery arrived at the crease and started to up the run rate, with both players punishing anything short and wide. Lachlan soon retired on 50no.
William Turnell joined Geoff at the crease and kept the run rate ticking over until William was bowled for 9.
Geoffrey followed up with last week’s good form by making a solid 39 until being caught behind.
Daniel O’Brien played a cracking shot that was unlucky to be caught at square leg.
Tom Coffey played some great shots making 6 until chopping one on to his stumps.
Jeremy Baer and Rudi Vodusek came out with the intent on keeping the runs ticking over.
This bought about Jeremy getting run out trying to do the team thing then Rudi was undone by a peach of a ball soon after
Pacey Haebich and Nate Kreeck both played well, keeping the good balls out with Pacey hitting the boundary and turning the strike over until he was brilliantly caught one handed from behind.
Jackson Purtell returned to increase the run rate with Nate and with 5 overs to go Nate edged one behind.
Lachlan Phillips then joined Jackson Purtell back in the middle for what was an entertaining last 5 overs, with both players running well between the wicket.
Lachlan then hit 3 sixes in a row off the second last over to finish the day on 83 not out.
Jackson held his bat to finish on 23 not out in what is a great sign for the season.
Yarra Bulls finishing the day on a very competitive 9 - 213 off their 42 overs.
The boys will need to bowl well next week and keep the pressure on Wangaratta right from the start.
Go Bulls.
