153 runs was the margin when Yarrawonga Mulwala scored a crushing victory over City Colts at the Barr Reserve in round 11 WDCA cricket.
After posting 311 last Saturday, the Lakers bowlers bowled consistent line and length to restrict the Colts chance to score runs.
While six Colts batsmen made double figures, the highest score was 36 runs off 105 balls.
Angus McMillan led the wicket takers with 3 for 29 off 17 overs and was well supported by Brendan Lewis 2 for 12 off 6 overs and Brock McCabe 2 for 34 off 18 overs.
Other wicket takers were Jim Irvine 1 for 24 off 9 and Corey McIntosh 1 for 0 off 0.3 overs.
With 2 rounds to play in the season, the Lakers are 14 points clear on top of the ladder and will take on 3rd placed Rovers United Bruck over the next two Saturdays at the WJ Findlay Oval in Wangaratta in round 12 action in the WDCA A Grade season.
C Grade
The Yarrawonga Mulwala C Grade have continued their good form with a 41-run victory against Benalla.
Playing at Vic Park the YMCC batted first and posted 183 off 32 overs, while in reply Benalla could only muster 4 for 142 off 36 overs.
The YMCC batters set the platform with openers Peter Brear and Josh Bozzola combining for a 71-run opening partnership with Brear scoring 39 and Bozzola 30.
Steve Lappin made a top score of 55 with the Lakers bowled out with four overs to play for 183.
With the ball, the YMCC Lakers were miserly as Benalla struggled to hit runs early in their innings. With only three players making double figures, the Lakers bowlers slowed the run rate to see Benalla bat out their overs but still fall 41 runs short of the required total.
Opening bowlers Jason Sharp 0 for 26 off 8 overs and Josh Bozzola 1 for 30 off 8 overs restricted early runs and Ted Graham further restricted the scoring with 0 for 14 off 8 overs.
With the introduction of spin bowling the Lakers were able to take wickets with Austin
Willett the leading wicket taker with 3 for 37 off 7 overs. The YMCC C Grades next game is against Wangaratta Magpies at South Wangaratta Recreation Reserve next Saturday.
Under 16
The Under 16 boys looked to defend 97 on Saturday but due to the rain the night before play got started but after 15 overs the match was abandoned.
Bad luck to Jett Peters and Darcy Hicks who competed in the under 15s country week side who went down in the grand final but congratulations to Rory Bartlett, Caleb Mitchell and Hudson Gillies on winning the under 16 country week title.
Under 14 Bulls
After setting a competitive total of 162 the weekend before the Under 14 Bulls were looking forward to their chance to bowl at the YMCC Rams.
Unfortunately, the cricket gods didn’t want this to happen and the game was called off due to the rain on Friday night getting under the covers at Mulwala and making the pitch unplayable.
This didn’t put a stop to the boys finding a way to get a social game in though and both teams headed off to Vic Park where they were able to play a 25 over per team scratch match.
Both teams were having a ball and proving to each other why the two YMCC teams sit 1st and 4th on the under 14s WDCA ladder respectively.
A highlight for the day was seeing three sets of brothers playing in the Bulls team with Daniel and Luke O’Brien, Tom and Ben Coffey and Nate and Van Kreeck as well as 1st gamer from the U12s Lucas Eales.
With one round to go before finals the Bulls will now take on Rutherglen next Saturday to try and consolidate top spot.
Awards for the 1st week against the Rams went to: TJ Docking for his gritty 22 off 80 which help us from being bold out early.
Jeremy Baer for holding up and end and making his highest score this season.
Lachlan Phillips for his Captains knock of 58no that helped build a competitive total.
Jackson Purtell for getting the innings off to a good start with his quick 24.
Under 12
On Friday night the Rams came up against hometown rivals the Bulls.
After losing the toss and being sent in, it wasn’t long before the wickets started to tumble, with Lucas Eales and Kade Michael departing in consecutive overs.
This then bought Van Kreeck and Nate Sheridan to the crease with both boys ticking the score over with some nice batting and retiring with 27 and 39.
Darcy Hargreaves and Ben Coffey came and went with Hargreaves stumped for 1 and Coffey run out for 3.
The Goudie boys were next in and provided some resistance with Braith retiring on 5 and Slater also being stumped.
The last pair of Jack Burns and Riley Barber came and went with score finishing on 116.
With the dark clouds looming large over head the Rams then came out to bowl with Nate Sheridan and Slater Goudie opening the bowling with tight lines and little luck.
Braith Goudie and Van Kreeck also bowled well limiting the runs to a minimum.
Darcy Hargreaves and Kade Michael then came on with both boys trying very hard in difficult conditions as the rain came in and put a halt to proceedings with the Bulls on 33.
Awards- Crusty Loaf - Nate Sheridan, Yarra Fish n Chips - Van Kreeck, Icecreamery - Braith Goudie, Wingates - Ben Coffey.
