The incident started after the man allegedly stole an ATV from a nearby property after crashing his vehicle on Harry’s Creek Rd at Boho on Monday, December 29.
Police were alerted and found a man driving the ATV along the Hume Fwy at Balmattum.
He and his dog attempted to hide from police in a paddock.
Police tried to negotiate with the man but were unsuccessful.
He was capsicum sprayed and tasered, but they had limited effect, and the man ran from police.
He was chased down by officers and arrested.
Police said the dog attempted to attack police during the incident, but police were able to separate it from the man during the arrest.
Local authorities were then able to secure the dog, while the man was taken to hospital from injuries sustained from crashing the car, police said.
On Wednesday afternoon, the 41-year-old Glenroy man remained in hospital under police guard.
He is expected to be charged at a later date.
