Emergency services were called to the bushfires at 3.15pm on Sunday, January 4, within the Lower Goulburn National Park in Shepparton’s north.
CFA and Fire Rescue Victoria crews attended the scene before handing over to Fire Forest Management Victoria.
The water-bombing aircraft that is based at Shepparton Airport during summer also assisted in firefighting efforts.
An advice message was pushed out on VicEmergency platforms, which was later downgraded to an information message.
An area of around two hectares was burnt before firefighters contained the blaze at around 6pm the same day.
FFMV and Victoria Police are continuing to investigate.
A spokesperson for FFMV said two ignition points around 20 metres apart had been identified.
A crew of around 10 FFMV firefighters and two tankers returned to the scene on Monday, January 5 with heat-detection equipment to identify remaining hotspots and black out at-risk areas.
FFMV will continue to patrol the area over the coming days in the lead-up to forecast extreme heat, with three days predicted to be over 40ºC before the weekend.
Police said there were caravans and vehicles in the vicinity at the time the fires broke out.
They are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward with information that may be of assistance to the investigation.
