Euroa recorded 145.5mm of rain, more than double its usual July average of 69.3mm. It had received more than its July average just three days into the month, recording 71mm.
Strathbogie also recorded 145.5mm of rain for the month, 24mm above its usual average.
Benalla recorded 95.9mm, 23mm above its usual July total. Some 56mm was recorded in the opening three days of the month alone.
It was a similar story for Seymour, which recorded 82.4mm — 22mm above its average July total.
Elsewhere, Cobram recorded 58mm, 15mm above its average July total.
Yarrawonga recorded 58mm, 12mm above typical July averages.
Primary lamb producer Graham Sudholz lives on a farm located in Taminick, about 30km from Benalla. He has been surprised with recent above-average rainfall.
Recent falls have taken the total to 386.5 mm for the year.
“It was surprising to get as much rain as we got because the forecast was for El Niño,” he said.
However, the recent rainfall has provided welcome relief.
“Our ewes have just lambed through July and we’ve had lots of pasture for them,” he said.
“It’s (the rain) helped recharge the dams and the underground water systems.”
Mr Sudholz is hoping for strong rain over the next month to finish the lambing season.
However, in other parts of the region, monthly totals were more modest.
Shepparton recorded 48.4mm of rain in July, just shy of its average of 49mm.
Echuca recorded 41.5mm, slightly above its average July total of 40mm.
Kyabram recorded 40.4mm, just below its July average of 41.8.
Rochester recorded 41.5 mm, below its July average of 44.1mm.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts parts of south-east Australia may experience unusually low rainfall over the next three months.
