The make-up of personnel involved in football premierships for Yarrawonga got together for an excellent luncheon reunion last Saturday in the club’s John Dempsey Pavilion.

Included in the 90 attendees were players, committee people, trainers and ladies committee members. Master of Ceremonies Matt Holgate bounced the ball, and Life Member and record-serving president Glenn Brear swooped, speaking about the 1959 premiership.
Glenn talked about the legacy created and left behind. Four players from that premiership 60 years ago – Lar Gleeson, Bob Flanagan, Danny Bourke and Basil Sheridan – were back at the JC Lowe Oval last Saturday.
That legacy is being part of Yarrawonga’s first ever premiership group, a wonderful, cherished memory.
Glenn specifically mentioned the enormous contribution of the late Mick McNamara who played over 300 games all up for the Pigeons and served in all key positions on the administration side, including treasurer, secretary and president.
Greg Ferguson spoke about being part of the 1988 reserves premiership team under coach Paul Walker, going through the season undefeated, with several players backing up that year’s premiership with the seniors flag the following year.
Yarrawonga’s senior coach today, Damien Sexton, who starred in the 1989 premiership team, spoke about the journey as to what makes a footballer.
In an entertaining version of events, the dashing wingman of that flag 30 years ago, Chris McNamara, spoke about the premiership celebrations.
A delicious two-course meal was prepared and served by the ladies committee. MC Holgate said it was a great effort to see the number of people who embraced the luncheon.
“It was a good opportunity to catch up with people, rather than a fleeting ‘hello’ when you see someone down the street,” the 1989 premiership centre-half-forward said.
“People loved catching up with each other. We thank everyone for coming, which included people from Melbourne.”
