YMGCR Bowls

It’s been a long time, but we are finally getting back to our home club and we can’t wait to see all our mates.
Had a bowl on Friday and it was so nice to bowl on our magnificent greens. Our club would like to take this time and thank our good friends at the Yarrawonga Bowls Club for all their support they have given our Victorian members.
In these times it is so important for all clubs in Yarra/Mulwala to support each other, so put your name down and play in each other’s social days.
Wednesday bowls saw Steve Gann and one of the new bowlers in Colin Withers win and two old stagers from Club Mulwala in Peter Humphreys and Malcolm Miller get the runners up.
Sunday we had about twenty bowlers training under the watchful eye of Anne Miles and they did many different drills and a bit of practice in measuring and a talk on bowls etiquette from Laureen Smith.
Last week one of the past players Billy Dicks turned ninety. He’s been a very good bowler for our club, one of his last games was back in 2012 when he skippered a rink in the B2 premiership team. He was a top all round sportsman, playing nine games for St Kilda in the VFL in the early 50’s before he later came to Yarra and captain/coached the pigeons in 1955 only to lose the preliminary final to Wangaratta.
On a nice Saturday you can occasionally still see Billy come and support his club.
Now for a few important dates: Opening day will be on Sunday, October 18 (more information will be given later).
We are still not certain if and when the pennant season will start but our club must be ready, so with the help of our two selection committee’s we will start training on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s at 1pm (both day’s will be for both mid-week and weekend players).
There will be a list for you to put your name down. This will be for the selectors to arrange teams for competitive practice.
If you haven’t got your name down for pennant please do so, this will aid in the selectors start putting together the teams.
ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
Many of our Victorian members have had their first roll up on their own greens in months and have been able to do so without wearing a face covering.
Wow, what a wonderful way to welcome in the very beautiful spring weather in paradise.
Thank you - The Victorian members of ClubMulwala had been able to play at Yarrawonga Bowls Club when the border was closed; where we were welcomed with open arms, at a distance of course and experienced playing our game with masks on.
We would like to thank the Executive Committee and members of Yarrawonga for their friendliness and wonderful warm welcome to their Club.
Where to from here - We have been notified by Ovens and Murray Bowls Region that, at this stage and of course pending changes that may occur, Pennant 2020/2021 could possibly commence on November 7.
This is proposed only and will depend on COVID-19 and certain restrictions being lifted. Watch this space.

We had another couple of our long serving members that celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary recently.
Congratulations to Una and Jim Campbell from all your friends at YBC.
To members that are not well at the moment, we wish you a speedy recovery.
To all, take care, stay safe.
