Despite an early morning deluge perfect conditions at Lonsdale Reserve greeted the Yarrawonga Mulwala A Reserve team in their season opener against Rovers United-Bruck.
Bowling first the Lakers hit a good line with length with opening pair Brady Bartlett and Angus Heslin both troubling the batsmen on multiple occasions.
15-year-old Caleb Mitchell was bowling good medium pace and was rewarded with the first wicket after a great catch by co-captain Brendan Hill.
Veteran Gary Browning was the pick of the bowlers with his crafty medium pacers, ‘Gus’ finished with the superb figures of 8 overs, 5 maidens 1 for 7.
15-year-old A Reserve debutant leg spinner Jobe Kennedy picked up the third wicket, after a sharp leg side stumping by young keeper Zac Fraser.
Chasing 157 for victory the Lakers got off to a slow start losing the first two wickets without a run on the board.
The rescue mission was left to A Grade premiership player Matt Casey and youngster Zac Fraser.
The pair provided a steadying partnership of 54 runs with Casey punishing anything that was short and working hard with young partner to provide the Lakers with a chance to launch in the second half of the innings.
Brady Bartlett complemented his fine spell with the ball with a swashbuckling innings to put pressure back on the bowling outfit, his 17-knock full of powerful hitting.
The dismissal of Matt Casey for a sublime 61 effectively ended the Lakers run chase, it took a superb diving left handed catch by Rovers-Bruck skipper Adam McNamara to dismiss Casey.
Whilst disappointed to lose the opening game of the season there was a lot to like from the young A Reserve outfit and with continued hard work at training the first win of the season will not be far away.
Special thanks for “Jug” O’Brien for his tireless work in preparing a great wicket at Lonsdale Reserve.
