A dominant bowling performance alongside two great batting performances has guided the Yarrawonga Mulwala Lakers C Grade to a valuable win against the Wangaratta Magpies.
After losing the toss Captain Jason Sharp and his Lakers were sent into the field.
Sharp’s bowling was akin to a boa constrictor conceding just 11 runs from his 8 overs.
Such was the tight bowling that at drinks the Magpies were just 2 for 37 from 18 overs.
Ted Graham coming on at second change was tempting the batsman and his ploy worked picking up 3 wickets for 32 runs from 8 overs.
Rod Peters bowled with great pace and after 4 overs had the figures of 1 for 1.
He went on to bowl his allotment of 8 overs with figures of 1 for 21.
While the Magpies were able to get the scoreboard ticking over; regular wickets fell with fellow opener Josh Bozzola claiming 1 for 22 off 7 overs while spinning maestro Rocky Leith took 1 for 7 off 2 overs to see the Wangaratta team finishing their 36 overs at 7 for 115.
After the tea break, the Lakers took to the batting crease with Bozzola joined by Dave True.
The pair combined for 27 runs from 6 overs before True fell for 6.
Peters joined Bozzola and after two cracking shots was run out in a centre wicket mix-up.
Steve Lappin came and went without adding to the score and just 3 runs later Bailey Frauenfelder was back in the pavilion.
Justin O’Brien added 5 runs alongside Bozzola before the run chase look to have stalled at 5 for 53.
Bozzola and Ben Pickering joined forces at the crease and ignited the run rate adding a 48 run partnership in 8 overs and with Bozzola reaching 50, he was dismissed with the score on 101.
Josh Bozzola’s fifty took him to 195 runs from three games in what looks like a strong season from the opener.
Sean McLarty joined Pickering and guided the team past the victory target.
Pickering made his way to 49, but in the chase for extra runs was dismissed to a high ball catch.
The Lakers finished the day on 143 with Ted Graham the not out batsman on 6.
Under 16
The Under 16 Lakers won again after successfully defending 202 against City Colts.
Caleb Mitchell got the boys off to a great start with an early wicket having the Colts 1/1.
The second wicket coming through a brilliant run out from the arm of Oscar Elliot.
The boys were good in the field making life difficult for the batsmen.
Jyda House come on for his second spell and took 3/6 in two overs which put the game on the Lakers terms, eventually bowling them out for 143.
Under 14 Bulls
Resuming the game against Rovers Bruck Yellow the boys arrived at Vic Park keen and ready to play.
The Bulls sent Geoffrey Montgomery and TJ Docking in to open the innings and they did exactly what was needed of them, keeping out the good balls and turning over the strike frequently.
This top order partnership helped to set the game up for the Bulls being 0-62 after 15 overs.
TJ was retired not out on a well-made 21 and this allowed Lachlan Phillips to play with the freedom he likes and dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground in a quick fire 53no off 25 balls.
Geoffrey soon followed with a well-constructed knock of 51no, Pacey Haebich and Daniel O’Brien came in for a well-made 9 each, whilst Jackson Purtell made a quick 12no before William Turnell came in for the last over of the day and hit a rapid 16 off the 6 balls he faced.
In the end the YMCC Bulls 2/205 were too strong for RBCC 8/111.
Award winners were: Crusty Loaf Bakery: TJ Docking, 2-2 off 6 & 21no; Subway: Geoffrey Montgomery 51no; Yarrawonga take away: Daniel O’Brien; Wingates Intersport: Nate Kreeck.
YMCC would like to thank these sponsors for their ongoing support of the club.
Under 14 Rams
A cold sunny morning treated the dedicated parents with some quality cricket at Tungamah Reserve last Saturday.
U14’s Rams Captain Ben Kennedy was sent to field on a magnificent bouncy Tungamah wicket asking his players to keep moving around and keep runs to a minimum.
All 42 overs for batting and bowling as a result of Mansfield keen to play in one full day, proved somewhat a blessing as their kids withstood some heated deliveries by Ollie Connell.
At the other end Jack (on his home deck) Costigan bowled another ripping spell to finish 2 for 17 off 4.
Both lads can be proud of their dedication to training throughout the week.
Runs began to flow off the bat for Delatite until Maya Hargreaves chipped in for 1/7, Jobe Fraser 1/5, and pick of the bowlers Xavier Mitchell 2/2 off 3 overs and 2 maidens.
Jess Brogan was solid with 1/3 followed by an Apples Appleby chipping in with one wicket.
Delatite all out for 81 and credible considering 3 or 4 top players were out of their side.
Change of innings whilst everyone enjoyed lunch with 81 runs to beat would be no easy task when 2 wickets fell for 4 runs.
Maybe watching tractors pass the oval or kookaburras in the trees had a detrimental impact to the opening pair falling very early with the score on 2 for 4.
Six overs down and desperate for someone to tighten up and steady the ship.
Bring onto the stage once again Maya Hargreaves.
Maya impacted the game, maturing at every opportunity, ducking under short pitched fast deliveries and splitting gaps with ease.
Runs continued as Jack Costigan pushed his chest out full of confidence claiming 2 wickets earlier and reaping the rewards from hard work at training.
Jack’s shot selection a highlight all day to finish on 35.
Not to be outdone Jobe continued his good form with a steady 26 clearly showing maturity beyond his years.
Thank you to the Delatite team for retrieving the ball past the netball courts after Jobe finished with 2 massive sixes.
Giving the top order a spell for the day meant some quality was still to come as the score ticked over 100.
Tom Lovel 28, Mitch Appleby 36 loading up to reach the fence on numerous occasions and Ollie’s Cope chipped in with 10 not out ensure the Rams finished on 222.
Another strong even contribution.
A big thank you to President Troy Costigan of the footy/netball club.
Tungamah has a terrific facility led by tireless volunteers preparing the pitch and mowing where required so hopefully this year more juniors/seniors coaches recognise this ground as a viable option through the remainder of the season.
Parents are also to be congratulated on supplying salads, morning tea and cooking up an awesome BBQ lunch for both teams.
Mansfield went home knowing the club culture is second to none.
Awards from Wingates and Crusty Loaf went to Tom Lovel, Maya Hargreaves and Xavier Mitchell.
Under 12 Rams
The Under 12 Rams travelled to Wangaratta to take on Ovens Valley United Black side.
Playing at the slightly damp Wangaratta High School, the young Rams got off to a great start restricting the opposition to just 51 runs from their 20 overs.
In a great team effort Slater Goudie was on top with a fine opening spell.
Van Kreek and Nate Sheridan bowled a maiden each and Ollie Watson took a nice wicket.
The fielding was the best for the year with all players giving their all.
Van took a great catch and also pulled off a run out from the boundary.
Taking to the batting crease all batters applied themselves well for their team.
Kade Michael and Van Kreek both made 12, Nate made 8 and Ollie Watson 6.
Braith, Lachlan and Slater retired not out.
Ben and Darcy both got starts before being run out and this week’s captain Jack Burns looked solid before loosing his wicket.
The Rams finished on 4 for 74 in a great team effort taking a well-deserved first win of the season.
Awards: Avalanche Ice Creamery: Slater Goudie, Video Land: Lachlan Johnson, Yarra Fish and Chips: Kade Michael, Wingates: Ollie Watson.
