Wheeler made 77 not out in one of the most brilliant knocks in YMCC history.
The innings wizardry was a mixture of poise and power and for those in attendance rated it won of the most important innings in the YMCC’s 12-year history in the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association.
Beginning the game, Delatite batted first and with James Irvine steaming into the bowling crease it took Irvine just 2 balls to take his first wicket.
Irvine bowled in tandem with Angus McMillan and in highly economical fashion Irvine took 1 for 10 from his 8 over allotment. McMillan bowled excellent lines to finish with 0 for 29 off 8 overs.
On debut Josh Mallichan bowled well and took 2 for 26 off 7 overs including his debut wicket of Earl Ree-Goodings, the Delatite opening batsman and wicketkeeper.
The YMCC Lakers were able to restrict the Delatite scoring and soon had them 6 for 65 with Matt McCabe 2 for 17 off 7 overs, Corey McIntosh 1 for 24 off 5 and Brock McCabe 1 for 17 off 5 overs. However, a rear-guard action between Delatite batsman Joe Cousins and Lach Scales saw the pair add 63 runs for the seventh wicket and Delatite finish their 40 overs at 7 for 128 and the Lakers with some work to do.
In reply, the YMCC Lakers opened the batting with Ben Welsh and Corey McIntosh and with just 10 runs on the board, McIntosh fell for 4 and incoming batsman Matt Casey was dismissed for balls later for just 2.
Welsh contributed 9 runs before the Lakers score was 3 for 19.
Harry Wheeler came to the crease and played with good intent but batting partners fell to the wayside in dramatic fashion.
With the score on 37, Captain Reid Clarke fell for 5 and was soon followed by Mitch Collins Bye 0, Brock McCabe 0 and Angus McMillan 0 and the Lakers were hanging by a thread at 7 for 37.
Wheeler could only watch as wickets fell around him; however, Matt McCabe came to the crease and batted sensibly in turning the strike over and allowing Wheeler to play his game, pushing through the gaps and cracking drives down the ground like tracer bullets.
In eerily similar fashion to Delatite it was a late wicket partnership that set the platform and McCabe and Wheeler contributed an 80-run partnership before McCabe was out for 14.
The importance of his innings was turning the strike over to allow Wheeler to play his game.
McCabe fell at 8 for 117 and the Lakers needed 12 runs to secure victory.
Debutant Josh Mallichan joined Wheeler and they guided the Lakers to 131, securing victory in the second last over of play.
In the final over Mallichan was dismissed for 3 and the Lakers finished at 9 for 131 and possible one of the greatest victories in the club’s history.
All plaudits to Harry Wheeler 77 not out, who produced when needed and continued to play an excellent brand of cricket and see the YMCC Lakers in second position on the WDCA Ladder.
The A Grade next play Beechworth in one day action at Stan Hargreaves Oval next Saturday and then play their final T20 game against Wangaratta Magpies at the Norm Minns Oval in Wangaratta on Sunday.
A Reserve - The A Reserve Lakers notched a strong win over third placed Ovens Valley United this weekend, led by a destructive bowling display from brothers Rory and Brady Bartlett.
Home for consecutive weeks at the picturesque Stan Hargreaves Oval, the Lakers were looking forward to testing their early season form against the third placed United side.
After losing the toss and being asked to field first, the Lakers started off a little waywardly before Rory Bartlett was brought into the attack.
Rory bowled with great control and had all batsmen under pressure with every ball from the outset. This seemed to push older brother Brady to find another gear and he claimed the open wicket to get the Lakers started.
The brothers then proceeded to collect the first seven wickets of the innings, bowling great line and length and putting the batsmen under pressure at all times.
At one stage Rory was on a hattrick and bowled a great ball but couldn’t take the opportunity.
Rory finished with 4 for 8 from 6 overs to win the bragging rights over Brady, who took 3 for 8 from 8 overs.
Jack Kennedy joined the attack and after impressing teammates by spinning the ball, claimed two wickets to help wrap up the tail.
Coach Brendan Lewis claimed the remaining wicket to close out the visitor’s innings at 79 runs in 31 overs.
Hudson Gillies was given the opportunity to open with Coach Lewis and the two batted well to put on a 40-run partnership for the first wicket, which set a great platform.
The Lakers made slow progress towards the total, but a number of players were able to spend quality time in the middle, including Jacob Bartlett who made a patient 16 batting at number three.
Kyle Archibald came in at number six this week, with the score at 4 for 60 and the opposition sensing a slim chance of an upset.
He quickly took that out of the equation with a mixture of powerful and controlled stroke play.
He finished on 39 not out from 35 balls and the team score on 7 for 113.
Next week the A Reserve team are scheduled for two games across Saturday/Sunday, with both on the road.
Saturday the Lakers will head back to Greta for a one-day game, before venturing to Beechworth on the Sunday for a T20 assignment.
B Grade - Saturday saw the Lakers B Grade head to Bright. Captain Gary Browning lost the toss and was sent in.
Lach Elliott and Justin O’Brien opened for the Lakers and got them off to a steady start.
Elliott took a few overs to adjust to the role of opener but once settled in he took to the Bright attack despatching anything in his hitting zone.
Elliott was dismissed right on drinks for a well compiled 53 which included 6 fours and 1 six. At the halfway mark of their overs the Lakers were going well at 1/91.
O’Brien was dismissed not long after drinks having been rattled in the grill by a head high full toss, the next ball was pitched up and got through his defences to have the Lakers 2/94.
Once again, the younger brigade stood up and steadied the ship, keeping the runs ticking over.
Lach Phillips, having made a century in the morning for the U16 Bulls, continued on and had the fielders chasing balls to all parts of the oval.
Phillips making his maiden Senior grade half century eventually going for 56 which included 9 fours and 1 six.
Lee Fraser was back in the fold and he and youngster Ben Kennedy put on a 33-run partnership in the final overs to get the Lakers past the 200 mark.
Fraser finishing 22 not out and Kennedy 9 not out. A formidable total of 6/208 from 36 overs to the Lakers.
After the adjournment the Lakers took to the field; Reece Norman and Bailey Frauenfelder opened the bowling and bowled good line and length to really restrict the Ovens Valley bats.
Norman taking the first two wickets and the Ovens Valley side were under pressure at 2/20.
Tom Lovel in his first B Grade game was thrown the ball by Captain Browning after some consolidation by the opposition.
The youngster took a bit of stick in his first two overs, but to his credit came back well in his second spell.
Perhaps a little more settled and less nervous in his second spell Lovel bowled some terrific, flighted leg spin to take 4 wickets. Finishing with the tidy figures of 4/46 from 8 overs.
This spell combined with tight bowling at the other end from several bowlers took the wind out of the Ovens Valley sides sails and set up victory for the Lakers.
The Lakers couldn’t quite get all 10 wickets but were able to restrict the Ovens Valley side to 9/142 at the end of their allotted 36 overs.
Another terrific display from the young Lakers players.
This week sees the Lakers B Graders back at Mulwala hosting the Greta side.
Should be no issues getting across the border this week, so the club are hoping to see a number of spectators following some of the young up and coming talent of the Lakers.
C Grade - The YMCC C Grade have defeated the City Colts by 45 runs at Victoria Park Number 2.
The Lakers made 220 at the crease with Ben Pickering scoring 40 from 30 balls, alongside 26 from 28 from Peter Brear.
Middle order batsman Rod Peters 24 from 31 and Josh Bozzola 23 from 38 contributed valuable runs while Rocky Leith made 21 from 36 and in his return to cricket Sean “HARRY” Mclarty belted 19 from just 16 balls.
The final score from the Lakers saw them dismissed for 220 from 35.5 overs.
The top partnerships were 75 between Rocky Leith and Ben Pickering and 42 between Rod Peters and Josh Bozzola.
In the field, the Lakers took control taking their first wicket at 20 and then had them 3 for 44.
Such was the tight bowling, that by the time City Colts had reached 71 they had lost 5 wickets.
Former A Grade player Mitch Howe came to the crease and held the Lakers at bay before they finally struck dismissing Howe with the score at 119.
The Colts lost their final batsman at 175 and the Lakers were victorious by 45 runs.
Bowling figures saw Jyda House continue his excellent form taking 4 for 38 from 8 overs to go with his 5 wicket haul last round.
Rod Peters took 3 for 32 from 7.5 overs and spinner Austin Willett took 2 for 25 from 3 overs.
Ted Graham went wicket-less but his great line and length saw figures of 0 for 20 off 7 overs.
The Lakers head into round 5 and will take on Rovers United Bruck at North Wangaratta Recreation Reserve next Saturday.
U16 Bulls - Round 3 saw the U16 Bulls take on Benalla at the picturesque Benalla Gardens oval.
With the home side winning the toss Benalla elected to bat first on a beautiful pitch and quick outfield.
Lachlan Phillips and Harry Barker opened the bowling and were doing their best to keep the ball on a good line and length.
Lachlan was able to get the first breakthrough in his 3rd over with a nice delivery nipping back in off the seam to clip the top of middle.
From here on, the next 15 overs were tough going and to give credit where credit is due the Benalla boys put together a well-made 88 run partnership.
For the 2nd wicket Benalla were playing shots all over the ground until Daniel O’Brien came on and enticed the batsmen into a pull shot which saw newcomer Hunter Frauenfelder take a spectacular one handed catch at backward square leg.
Not to be done with there, Daniel replicated his delivery in his 2nd over with Geoffrey Montgomery taking a great low catch behind square to dismiss the set opener for 68.
Then Daniel sent down a peach of a delivery to clip off stump to have himself 3 wickets in 2 overs. While all boys bowled extremely well Benalla were up to the task and took their total to 4-174 of their allotted 42 overs.
Day 2 saw the young Bulls arrive at the Gardens oval full of hope and nerves at the same time. Jackson Purtell and Tyler True were given the opportunity to lead the way with Jackson getting off to a great start making quick runs, before getting one that cut back to see him depart for 8.
Lachlan Phillips joined Tyler True at the crease and set about getting the score going.
Tyler and Lachlan played with grit, determination and power which saw Tyler hit the boundary line regularly, whilst Lachlan put three 6’s over the fence, one of which went into the upper grandstand to see the bulls get to drinks at 1-96 with Tyler on 32 and Lachlan 51.
Both boys had given the team a great opportunity to chase down the large total in the back half of the game, with 9 wickets in hand they were told to try and up the run rate before Tyler edged one through to the keeper after drinks for a well made 32 as opener.
Geoffrey Montgomery joined Lachlan and both continued on their way taking the score to 132 before Geoff was caught at cover.
Benalla were able to get on a roll to get another 2 quick wickets to have the bulls 5-153 with Lachlan and William Turnell holding firm, you could tell something special was about to happen.
Lachlan hammered a shot through cover to bring up his maiden century and then retiring after an entertaining knock of fourteen 4’s and three 6’s in his 102no, much to the delight of his teammates and spectators from both sides.
Tom Coffey joined William Turnell still with a job to do needing 20 more runs for victory and never looked in doubt as the both blazed away, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground.
With Benalla’s total successfully passed Harry Barker and TJ Docking were sent in to try to give everyone an opportunity and they too hit the ball to all parts of the ground.
A tremendous effort by all the boys as large run chases are never easy.
Awards went to: OneZach - Lachlan Phillips, Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club - Daniel O’Brien, Yarrawonga fish & chips - Tyler True, Wingates sports award - Tom Coffey.
On behalf of the YMCC the Bulls would like to thank these sponsors for their ongoing support of the great club.
Under 14’s - The YMCC Lakers Under 14’s notched up their maiden victory of the season with a superb bowling and fielding performance against Beechworth on the weekend.
Kade Michael was the star with the ball picking up the impressive figures of 2 for 3 off four overs with brilliant swing bowling that had the batsmen in trouble throughout the innings.
Youngster Nyle Tahir picked up his first wicket of the season following a sharp catch by Mitch Adkins whilst Lucas Eales capped off a great game picking up the first wicket of the day with full delivery that wrapped the batsmen on the pads.
Jeremy Baer bowled with energy before being rewarded following a great catch by Lucas Eales.
Will Murphy, Jobe Fraser Max Chadwick were great in the field with their athleticism and ability to throw the ball in from the boundary line.
Skipper Xavier Mitchell who bowled well throughout the day managed his bowlers well at the end of the innings wisely using the spin of Nate Sheridan to take pace off the ball.
Sheridan was also good all day finishing with the figures of 1 for 11 off 5 overs.
The ultimate allrounder Lachie Lee-Conway fresh off a great catch with the keeping gloves, was given the task of bowling the final over of the match and he didn’t let the team down with a great over to seal victory for the Lakers.
Award Winners: Kade Michael – Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club, Nyle Tahir – Wingates, Will Murphy – Crusty Loaf Bakery.
