The Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club A Grade will need to score more than 171 to defeat Rovers United Bruck in round 12 action.
The first placed Lakers lost the toss and bowled against the third placed Rovers.
Will Sharp opened the bowling and in his first spell conceded just 7 runs from 8 overs; while partner Angus McMillan 18 straight overs only split by a drink break.
McMillan claimed 2 for 27.
Such was the great line and length from the Lakers bowlers that after 27 overs, Rovers could only muster 33 runs for the loss of one wicket.
With the score at 5 for 76 off 44 overs, the Rovers had their most productive partnership with 45 runs scored for the sixth wicket to advance the score to 6 for 121 from 63 overs.
The Lakers bowlers shared the wickets as Rovers were able to bat out their 75 overs and finish the day at 8 for 171.
Corey McIntosh took 1 for 31 off 11 overs; Matt McCabe 1 for 25 off 11 overs; Brendan Lewis 1 for 11 off 9 overs and Brock McCabe 1 for 41 off 11 overs; Will Sharp finished the day with the luckless figures of 0 for 35 off 15 overs.
The Lakers will journey back to the W J Findlay Oval in Wangaratta with the knowledge that winning the game will secure the top position on the ladder with just the last round to play before finals.
B Grade
The B grade boys travelled to Milawa for their last 2-day match of the season, it was a lovely day for cricket with the sun out and not a cloud in sight.
Winning the toss, it was an easy decision for the Lakers to have a bat first.
David True and Ned Mullins opened up proceedings and put together a solid opening stand that gave the lads a good platform to build from.
Mullins fell for a well-made 56 and True followed shortly after for a gritty 27.
Mitch Collins Bye and Geoff Montgomery started to put together another partnership before Collins Bye was trapped in front for 36.
Montgomery and Tom Hicks finished out the rest of the 34 overs with the Lakers sitting pretty at 4-151.
When it was Milawa’s turn to bat, they made the young Lakers side work for their wickets.
It wasn’t until Rory Bartlett broke through in his sixth over that the Lakers finally got on the board. Tom Hicks being the pick of the bowlers taking 3-9 off his 6 overs, Mullins and Collins Bye both picked up one wicket each with Milawa finishing the day 6-71.
The Lakers will look to capitalise on their strong position next weekend as they end the season with a bye in the last round.
Under 16
The under 16s boys went on the long drive to Mansfield on the weekend to take on Delatite.
Losing the toss and being sent in to bowl the pressure was on from the start.
Openers Caleb Mitchell and Rory Bartlett gave the batsmen nothing.
At 2/6 the bowling kept getting better with everyone in the team executing their line and length. Eventually bowling Delatite out for 71 with Rory Bartlett taking 4/7 which all 4 hit the stumps off his 6 overs and Tyler Norman taking a ripper catch to finish the innings.
In reply the boys had to bat for five overs and finished the day on 0/8.
Under 14 Bulls
On Saturday the U14 YMCC Bulls travelled to Barkly Park to take on Rutherglen.
After losing the toss, Rutherglen sent the Bulls in to bat.
Geoffrey Montgomery and Jackson Purtell opened the innings with both players punishing anything short or wide.
Geoff got off to a flyer before lofting one to long on for a quick fire 27.
Lachlan Phillips came in and joined Jackson and he too was in a mood to punish the Rutherglen bowlers.
After compiling a quick 27 there was a mix up between the wickets that saw Phillips just short of his crease.
Enter William Turnell who came in and smacked boundaries at will, including 2 sixes that got all the boys up and about.
On the last ball before drinks William copped a beautiful ball that clipped his off stump, sending him on his way for a well-made 31.
Wanting to keep the momentum going Daniel O’Brien was sent in to play with freedom and swing that new bat of his.
Jackson and Daniel were brutal in their attack on the Rutherglen bowlers, with Jackson Purtell crafting out
a magnificent first half century making 50 and retiring and wouldn’t you know it, 8 boundaries later Daniel had retired on 51no for his highest score to date as well.
TJ Docking joined Tom Coffey who both looked at ease pushing ones and twos until both boys found out the joys of turf cricket, with balls keeping a bit lower than expected and being bowled.
Jeremy Baer worked his way to 6 before being well caught, this brought Nate (Simba) Kreeck to the crease who kept the scoreboard ticking over clipping 1s and 2s off his pads with ease.
Jackson returned to help out Nate adding another 3 runs to hold his bat after opening the innings for a well-made 53no.
At the end of the day the young Bulls produced their highest score of the season compiling 6 for 247 off their 42 overs, which was more impressive considering they only had 9 players available this week.
The boys will now look to bowl well against their opponents next Saturday.
Very proud of all the boys in what was an even contribution from all players.
