“Thank you everyone coming to play in the Godfathers golf day,” Godfathers President Graeme Wilson said in respect of the 27 women and 63 men who took to the Lake Course.
“I thank all our sponsors, the Pro Shop and ground staff for the day. And a huge thank you to Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort for this wonderful amount of $3,800.”
Forty-eight points and 37 points were the scores of both women’s and men’s winners and runners-up.
Claiming the Ken (Pascoe) Ellis title and having his name on the perpetual trophy for the day’s stableford event was Bob Woodgate, with ‘Kanga’ Orr runner-up.
It was a joy for Bob to be on centre stage with the Godfathers President. “His dad Bob taught me plumbing when I was in Melbourne. Graeme moved to Yarrawonga and I hadn’t seen him for 40 years,” Bob said.
Lila Bennett has her name on the event’s Ladies Stableford Trophy, edging out Carol McDonald.
Mr Wilson praised his hard working team of Godfathers, some of whom spent all day cooking the much-appreciated barbecue.
Included in the all-dayers to whom the president referred was keen golfer Mick Lawless who was arguably the best Yarrawonga footballer to wear No. 25 on his back. Other big names who come to mind who carried that number were premiership players Andrew McKellar and Brendan Fevola.
The other person to be named by the Godfathers President was Maurie Coughlan who was described by fellow Godfather and former boxer John (Jinx) Clarke as “a dynamic, tough in-and-under footballer who was a favorite among female spectators”.
Along with all winners’ speeches, Mr Cunningham praised the work of the small number, 1973-established Godfathers group.
“This group has been going for nearly 50 years which is a great effort,” the golf president said. “I am very happy to present the cheque of $3,800.”
Club vice president Laurie Bridgeman would also be happy – he was the lucky $500 raffle winner. Immediate past president and former Godfather of the Year Dario Prighel wouldn’t be unhappy claiming second prize.
