For more than 50 years The Murray Marathon, now known as The Massive Murray Paddle, has conducted the five-day race that sees people paddle their way from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill.
The cancellation joins a long list of local major events, such as the Yarrawonga Mulwala Multisport Festival, The Lake Mulwala Rod Run and the Lake Mulwala Cod Classic that have had to skip 2020 due to the pandemic.
The gruelling 404km event, which was to be held in this year in late November, has raised money for several charities, but event directors Shannon and Kate O’Brien said cancelling the event is the right thing to do.
“It is with great sadness that we have been forced to cancel the 2020 Massive Murray Paddle (MMP),” O’Brien said.
“The Victorian Government released their roadmap to re-opening the state and the goals that need to be achieved are very tight and one is even on November 23.
“Based on this, the MMP falls outside of these government guidelines.
“We are very disappointed to have to cancel our great race this year, however we really look forward to seeing you all in 2021.”
Next year’s MMP is now in the planning for November 22 to 26, 2021.
