The next event on the Yarrawonga tennis calendar is the annual All Stars Classic Tournament, now in its seventh year.
This year’s tournament will run from Sunday, January 18 to Tuesday, January 20.
Celebrated on the tournament circuit, the event will feature the best open-age players as well as juniors.
Entries are now open and will close early in the new year. Local players are encouraged to enter.
Tuesday Men’s Tennis
The sixth round of Tuesday Men’s Tennis was played last week under perfect conditions, with courts in excellent shape.
While there were still plenty of missed shots, this only added to the friendly banter on court.
This week marked the last round of the season before the Christmas break, which concluded with pizzas and refreshments and a review of the first half of the season.
Match highlights:
- Laver vs Sampras: In a surprising result, bottom-placed Sampras defeated top-placed Laver 5 sets to 1. Andrew Beggs and Leslie Ryan also performed strongly, winning all their sets.
- Federer vs McEnroe: Close matches all around, with Federer winning 4 sets to 2. No player won all of their sets.
- Agassi vs Wilander: The match of the night, ending 3 sets each. Agassi prevailed by 4 games, with every set hotly contested.
- Connors vs Djokovic: Connors took the win 4 sets to 2, with Liam Mansfield impressing by winning all his matches.
- Becker vs Borg: Becker mirrored Connors’ scoreline, winning 4 sets, led by skipper Sean Robinson.
- Edberg vs Lendl: Edberg secured a 5 sets to 1 victory, with Gary Page and Brendan Foran combining well to dominate.

Juniors to Visit Australian Open
Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club juniors have been given the exciting opportunity to attend Australian Open Hot Shots Day on Thursday, January 22.
Participants will travel by bus to Melbourne, take part in activities, and enjoy seats in John Cain Arena to watch second-round matches featuring Australian players.
A few seats are still available on the bus. This is a unique chance for juniors to experience an electric atmosphere and world-class tennis.
Saturday Juniors
The junior program is now on a Christmas break. Hopefully, Santa has filled stockings with racquets and tennis balls to keep the young players inspired.
Members have full access to the courts during the break.
Junior Tennis will resume on Saturday, January 31.
The new season will feature the Premier League for older players and Hot Shots and coaching groups for skill development and fun.
Places are still available in all programs, and new players are encouraged to join.
Wilby and District Tennis Association
The iconic Wilby and District Tennis Association continues to provide social tennis for players of all ages and abilities.
The competition has helped many local players develop their skills.
Ladder After Round 9:
Telford 57, Tungamah 51, Savernake 42, Burramine 36, Wilby 17, Mulwala 13
Powerhouses Telford and Tungamah appear set to dominate the finals. The competition now takes a Christmas break and will resume on Friday, January 30.
Thursday Ladies Tennis
The Thursday Ladies had a very successful Season 1, which concluded in December. Season 2 will commence on Thursday, February 5, running for six weeks.
Players enter individually, and teams are then formed to cater to a range of abilities.
Goulburn Murray Tennis Association
The Association is also on a Christmas break. It provides a great opportunity for players to compete against others from different clubs.
Yarrawonga’s Division 3 team has enjoyed a successful return after six years, including a tie in the last round.
Congratulations to Danielle Lawrence, Angela Mitchell, Renne Byrne, Xavier Chessells, and Thomas Lawrence.
Yarrawonga has a strong relationship with Numurkah Lawn Tennis Club, allowing top players to participate in Division 1 and 2 teams.
- Numurkah Division 2: Mid-ladder, with Tess Bassett, Ellen Bruce, Hayley Bennett, and Daryl Bennett aiming to climb higher.
- Numurkah Division 1: Chasing five consecutive premierships, currently third, with Grant Chappell, Jack Bassett, and Lucy Bassett expected to lead the charge in the new year.
Easter Tennis Tournament
Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club will host its annual Easter Tournament, the largest in Australia, on 57 courts over four days.
Entries are capped at 1,250 players, with around 500 on the waiting list. Member entries open on January 10. Start planning your doubles combinations now.
Rock Up and Play Sessions
The YLTC hosts social aggregate-style tennis:
- Tuesday mornings, 9:00 a.m. – Ladies
- Wednesday mornings, 9:00 a.m. – Men
