Both A Grade and A Reserve Lakers struggled with the bat, with A Reserve falling just 1 run short after their middle order provided a comeback.
C Grade also came agonisingly close and tied with Gapsted, but due to being the lower ranked team will not advance to the grand final this weekend.
The B-Grade team will now fly the flag for YMCC and will take on Rovers United Bruck in the decider in Wangaratta on Saturday, March 26 from 1.30pm.
A grade fail to fire
Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club faced its biggest defeat in finals after going down by 59 runs against Wangaratta Magpies in the WDCA Semi Final.
Day 1 saw the YMCC bowl with great discipline to restrict Wangaratta to 115 runs from 67 overs. Gus McMillan was the pick of the bowlers taking 4 for 31 off 23 overs, with James Irvine 2 for 23 off 14 overs.
Matt McCabe took 1 for 15 off 8 overs and Brock McCabe the other wicket taker with 1 for 26 off 14 overs.
Two Magpies batsmen in Menon 48 and Matheson 24 held the YMCC at bay for a long period of time. The Magpies had three 20 plus run partnerships which enabled them to push the total past 100.
After the Magpies set the YMCC 115 for victory on Day 1, Day 2 saw the YMCC needing to bat for long periods and form partnerships.
Unfortunately, the best partnership for day was the opening stand of 12 runs and Harry Wheeler was the only batsman to score double figures being dismissed for 20.
The YMCC batted out 34 maidens in surviving 58.3 overs to score just 56 runs. Disappointingly five players could only muster 1 run each which was credit to the tight bowling lines by the Wangaratta Magpies.
A Reserve fall short by 1 run
Yarrawonga Mulwala A Reserve have suffered a 1 run loss against Ovens Valley in Semi Final actions.
After dismissing Ovens Valley on Day 1 for 99, the YMCC bowling figures saw Jyda House tear through the Tigers batting line up taking 5 for 26 off 16 overs.
Jacob Bartlett took 3 for 23 off 16 overs and Andrew Dishot 2 for 8 off 10.2 overs to round out the innings.
Lakers started their batting innings with the loss of early wickets and only the middle order of Mitch Collins Bye 16, Fraser Smart 30 and Ben McDonald 14 showed resistance, before the tail fell away to be dismissed 1 run short of the target and with 17 overs to spare in the batting innings.
A disappointing way to end the season for both A and A Reserve teams.
B Grade through to decider
The B Grade Semi Final was played at Mulwala on Saturday with the Lakers taking on Merton. Yarrawonga Mulwala won the toss and batted first.
The Lakers got off to a good start being able to keep the scoreboard ticking over by rotating the strike.
The opening partnership built a solid base for the Lakers to work with. Justin O’Brien the first to fall with the score on 63 having made 20.
O’Brien’s opening partner in Marcus Hargreaves was the next to fall shortly after and the Lakers were 2/66 in the 16th over.
Adam Dodd and Steve Lappin then combined to form another partnership. Lappin falling for 17 with the score on 97.
The Lakers then lost another couple of wickets before Hunter Frauenfelder joined Dodd and the pair put on 51 runs for the 6th wicket.
The pair picked off the bad deliveries when they presented and dispatched them to the boundary, also finding the gaps as needed. This pushed the Lakers past the 160 mark.
Frauenfelder was the last wicket to fall with a well-made 22 from 22 balls. Adam Dodd was the top scorer with the bat making 47 not out.
Ben Pickering then took 2 runs from the last ball to nudge the Lakers score to 6/169 at the end of the allotted 36 overs.
When the Lakers took to the field Ben Pickering took the new pill and was rewarded with a wicket as the batter found the safe hands of Hunter Frauenfelder from his fourth delivery.
Gus Browning came on from the other end and he and Pickering kept things relatively tight for the first 6 overs.
A change in the bowling saw Josh Bozzola take a wicket and shortly afterwards Ben Pickering had another. The Lakers were well placed having Merton now 3/27.
A small partnership was building from the Merton team, but some great fielding from Geoff Montgomery and a direct hit had the Merton Captain well short of his crease trying for a quick single.
Merton now 4/45, but they steadied and put together another solid partnership of 45 runs.
Hunter Frauenfelder then broke the partnership taking two wickets in consecutive overs.
Ollie Connell then came on after Frauenfelder’s spell and although his spell didn’t start well, he certainly ended up with the wickets.
Being on a hat trick at one stage but not able to convert. Connell’s wickets took the Merton score to 9/109.
But it took a little while to get the final wicket the Lakers required for victory. With Connell taking his fourth wicket for the day the Merton side were all out for 122 and the Lakers B Grade side into their third consecutive Grand Final.
A special mention to young Archie Purtle who was called up late to the side and did a tremendous job in the field in his first senior grade appearance and also bowled a couple of overs.
Bowling figures were Ollie Connell 4/18, Hunter Frauenfelder 2/19 and Ben Pickering 2/22.
The Lakers will take on Rovers United Bruck in the decider in Wangaratta on Saturday, March 26 from 1.30pm.
C Grade tie with Gapsted but fail to advance
The YMCC C Grade outfit have tied with Gapsted in Semi Final action, but due to being the lower ranked team, the YMCC will not advance to the Grand Final.
Gapsted batted first at Gapsted Recreation Reserve and made 8 for 129 off their allotted 36 overs.
Bowling figures were Daniel O’Brien with 2 for 24 off 8 overs, TJ Docking 2 for 39 off 5 overs, Jace Gove 1 for 2 off 2 overs, Ted Graham 1 for 17 off 8 overs, Tom Coffey 1 for 14 off 6 overs and Will Murphy 1 for 22 off 7 overs.
With the bat, the Lakers were bowled out in the final over with four balls to spare in the match.
Peter Brear made 30 at the top of the order and Ted Graham made 29 in the middle order.
It was great that the lower order future of the club was able to score valuable runs with Dan O’Brien making 14 off 15 balls, Will Murphy 12 off 18 balls and Lucas Eales 9 not out off 23 balls.
Unfortunately, the YMCC C Grade team were not able to score the winning run; but all should be very proud that the younger players were given great opportunities and improved as the season went on and to miss a Grand Final while is disappointing the team should be proud of their efforts.
