Yarrawonga Bowls Club
Monday 16th February – Social Bowls
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
On Monday 16th February, we had 28 players on the green for our Social Monday session. Winners were Bluey and Joy Watt – well done! Runners-up were Noeleen and Joe Borg – great job!
The jackpot went unclaimed, but the lucky number was won by Dave Charrington.
2-Bowl Triples – Wednesday, February 11
Our first 2-bowl triples event for the year was held on Wednesday, February 11, and what a fantastic night it was.
36 players from local clubs participated on a hot and windy evening. The music was playing, the bowls were rolled with good-spirited humour, and even the flies and midgies joined in, deciding to be particularly friendly.
A big thank you to all participants, the many supporters who came to watch, and the club for organising a wonderful supper.
The next 2-bowl triples match will be held on Wednesday 18th March at 6:30 pm. Entries are on the sheet at the front of the club.
Over 60’s Competition
The club will be hosting the annual Bob Jeffcott Day on Tuesday, February 17, in honour of the great man. A light lunch will be provided, and we look forward to another wonderful day as usual.
Barefoot Bowls is Back
The ever-popular Barefoot Bowls continues to thrive under the new lights, with numbers still strong for this well-loved activity.
Thursday nights really are like a family. The cost is $5 per person, which includes a BBQ dinner. The BBQ starts at 6:00 pm, with bowls from 6:30 pm to approximately 8:30 pm. There will also be raffles and prizes.
Please ensure your name is on the sheet at the front of the clubhouse by 3:00 pm. If you need to cancel, please also update the sheet so the draw can be completed correctly.
Friday Night Happy Hour
Last Friday saw a happy group of bowlers enjoying camaraderie and a chat to round out the week.
Why not come along this week for a cold drink and a yarn? Happy Hour is held every Friday from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, with the bar opening at 4:00 pm.
We look forward to seeing everyone on the greens.
To all our club members and the wider community: good health and good bowling.
Club Mulwala Bowls
Last Tuesday marked the final round of home and away matches for all Club Mulwala teams, and the club finished on a high, with all three teams recording impressive wins.
Attention now turns to the finals, with two teams having qualified in both the midweek and weekend competitions.
On the weekend, A3 and B1 have secured spots, while midweek, A2 and A3 will compete. Congratulations to all players for their efforts and results throughout the season.
Saturday saw the first of the semi-finals, with the A3 team taking on Howlong at Border Golf and B1 facing St James at Tungamah.
The A3 match proved to be a tough contest all day. Club Mulwala only gained a slight lead in the final ends but managed to hold on, ultimately winning by just four shots.
This success was built on strong rink performances, particularly from Les Spencer's rink and Darkie Day's rink, who battled through the final five ends to secure the victory and earn a week off before the next stage.
The B1s continued their late-season form to record an overall win by 12 shots. Steve McPhee's rink led the way, delivering great bowling throughout, ably supported by Ian Morrfew's rink, to achieve a convincing win.
The team now faces Moyhu in the preliminary final, with a spot in the Grand Final at stake.
On the club scene, the Mixed Pairs finalists have been decided, with the final to be played later in the week. Entries for the Men’s and Ladies’ Pairs competitions are now open, with the first round scheduled for mid-March.
The Loris Lockheed Triples will take place on 1st March, and there are still spots available. Members are encouraged to enter to help celebrate this club legend’s time at Club Mulwala.
Other upcoming events include Friends in Common Day and Remember Our Heroes, so keep an eye out for entry forms when they become available.
Following the conclusion of the pennant finals, Tuesday Social Bowls will resume, and the entry sheet will be posted.
That’s all for this week. Good bowling to all, and best of luck throughout the playoffs.
Tungamah Bowls Club
Midweek Pennant
Tungamah was at home to Corowa Civic, with destiny in our own hands.
The team grabbed the opportunity and won overall 70 to 56 shots, collecting 10 points.
This result lifted the club from 5th to 3rd on the ladder. Well done to skip Jeff Armstrong, Jack Dridan, Kerry Ralph, and Robert Sidebottom, who achieved a 33 to 8 shot victory. Finals, here we come.
Weekend Pennant
Tungamah hosted the B1 Elimination and Qualifying Final, with Club Mulwala taking on St James, and Moyhu facing Myrtleford.
It was an excellent day for the club, and participants were complimentary about the green and the hospitality. Thanks go to all club members and supporters who helped in so many ways on the day.
Pairs Championships
The Pairs Championships continued on Thursday with some very close matches. Our green continues to be busy each Thursday night as membership draws are held.
The green is running well after its renovation, and plenty of activities are planned for March, including the commencement of 100 Up on Thursdays.
Farmers Night - March 13th
Farmers Night is a popular annual event where local farmers, their wives, and families come together to enjoy the hospitality of Tungamah Bowls Club.
Some great talent is on display as participants compete on the green rather than for the best crop result.
The competition can be very spirited, and it is wonderful to see children playing in the playground or relaxing under umbrellas with their parents.
Generous sponsors, such as Melaluka Trading, enhance the evening with excellent raffles.
This night allows farmers to relax after the stress of the harvest, which may not always have been as successful as hoped.
Last year, the Wren team, consisting of Lockie Wren, Allan Ralph, Frank Einsporn, and Terry Brear, won the Melaluka Cup, with Connells finishing as runner-up. The question remains: who will take the cup this year?
First Responders “000” Cup - March 17th
This night is dedicated to our 000 heroes, providing a venue free of pressures and phones, where colleagues from the Fire Brigade, Ambulance, SES, or Police can come together.
Participants play bowls, have fun, and compete for the “000” Cup. Many attendees who have never played bowls before have taken to the game with ease.
Last year, St James Fire Brigade won the event with Steve Murphy, Anthony and Jenny Beggs, and Gavin Fear.
Boosey 1000 Classic - March 28th
Teams are encouraged to get organised for this popular Triples event, which promises another great day of competition.
Presentation Night & Major Raffle Draw - April 18th
Raffle tickets are now available for $20, offering the chance to win fantastic prizes.
The first prize includes flights for two to Noosa for five days plus $1000 spending money, along with other prizes.
The second prize includes six tickets to a Melbourne Storm game at AAMI Park in the Corporate Lounge, plus additional prizes.
The third prize includes a Stihl chainsaw, carry case, and esky.
Players are reminded to ensure they have a book of tickets to sell.
As a Tungamah player, this is your club, and participation is expected both on and off the green.
YMGCR Bowls
Midweek Pennant
The A1s played their final home and away game of the season at home against Benalla. The final scores saw YMGCR 64 shots and 10 points defeat Benalla 49 shots and 4 points.
On paper, it looked like a comfortable win, but it was somewhat of a pyrrhic victory, with two YMGCR rinks going down to Benalla and one rink achieving a huge win that ultimately carried the A1s over the line.
Hats off to Laureen Smith (L), Ian Febey (2), Michael Vaughan (3), and Anne Miles (S), who defeated their Benalla opponents 36 shots to 11.
The A1s enter the finals in second place, with nine wins and 127 points. Their first finals match is a qualifying final against Corowa RSL at Corowa Civic Bowling Club.
Corowa RSL finished the season with 10 wins and 147 points, setting the stage for what promises to be a closely fought and compelling game.
The A2s hosted Dederang at the Golf Club for their final home and away match of the 2025/2026 season.
In a pre-finals tune-up, the A2s showed no mercy, winning 99 shots and 14 points to Dederang’s 33 shots and 0 points.
Leading the charge were David Irvine (L), Robyn Moore (2), Caroline Reilly (3), and Allan Goudge (S), who dominated their opponents 39 shots to 9.
The A2s mirrored the A1s’ season closely, finishing second with nine wins and 126 points. They face first-placed Club Mulwala at Wangaratta in a qualifying final.
Club Mulwala had a stellar season, finishing first with 12 wins and 164 points.
This promises to be another exciting contest.
The B2s traveled to Howlong for their final home and away game, with the home side prevailing after the 63rd end. Howlong recorded 79 shots and 14 points, defeating YMGCR 51 shots and 0 points.
Despite the loss, Bruce Davie (L), Gavin Borwick (2), Gary Hart (3), and Vic Brincat (S) pushed their opponents throughout the game, going down 16 shots to 23.
The B2s finish the home and away season in fourth place with seven wins and 95 points. They will meet Tungamah in an elimination final at Corowa RSL.
Tungamah won one fewer game than YMGCR but finished third with six wins and 96 points.
Thursday Social Bowls
Last Thursday, 24 players turned out for the weekly game of nominated three-bowl pairs played over 22 ends.
The games were played on the recently renovated East Green, which is coming back into excellent playing condition.
Barb Tennyson and Mick Reilly won the day, sharing first prize of $80 and a drink card each.
The runners-up prize was shared by Sue Evans and Chris Horne, who won $40.
The lucky losing rink consolation prize of $30 was awarded to Kerry Kinnane and Peter Lidgerwood.
The first Lucky Number prize of $10 was won by Mick Reilly, and the second Lucky Number prize of $10 was won by Ron Lamson.
Weekend Pennant
The A1s entered the finals series with an elimination final against Rutherglen at Wangaratta Bowling Club. Wangaratta’s greens, which have undergone significant renovation, were an absolute pleasure to play on. Unfortunately for the A1s, it was not their day.
The final scores saw Rutherglen 84 shots and 16 points defeat YMGCR 75 shots and 2 points. Laureen Smith (L), Colin Withers (2), Anne Miles (3), and Ian Brimblecombe (S) were the only winning rink for YMGCR, defeating their opponents 28 shots to 10.
In retrospect, there was only a 14-point difference between fifth-placed Wangaratta (six wins, 124 points) and YMGCR (third place, six wins, 138 points). Rutherglen, in fourth place, also had six wins and 127 points.
With three sides so close at the end of the home and away season, it was always going to come down to who performed on the day in the elimination final, and this season, that was Rutherglen.
Congratulations to the A1s on a creditable season, and onward and upward for next year.
The B2s have been the quiet achievers of YMGCR weekend pennant for 2025/2026, finishing third with five wins and 116 points. With several new bowlers in the side, their season is even more impressive.
In the elimination final at Howlong Golf Club, they faced fourth-placed Myrtleford, who finished the season with six wins and 114 points. YMGCR recorded a solid win, 66 shots and 12 points to Myrtleford’s 55 shots and 2 points.
Winning in fine style were Neville Coleman (L), Tom Kindred (2), Noel Loft (3), and David Irvine (S), who defeated their opponents 21 shots to 10.
The B2s now face Corowa Civic in a preliminary final. Civic finished the season in third place with 11 wins and 164 points and will be worthy opponents for YMGCR.
YMGCR / Mercy Health Barefoot Charity Challenge
Week two of the YMGCR / Mercy Health Charity Challenge saw 114 bowlers turn out, with around 50 supporters and spectators enjoying the action.
Winning sides on the night included Hill Billies, Mercy Health, Garden Lovers, Rich Glen, Men’s Shed, Bushies, Limestone Jacks, Greenkeepers, Fab Four, Yarrawonga SES, Jimmies, Bare Minimum, Grass Kickers, Mick’s Mob, and the Bundalong Bandits. A progress ladder will be provided in next week’s edition of the Chronicle.
Until next week, good bowling.
