Wednesday Social Bowls
Last Wednesday, May 6, saw another strong turnout of 40 players shoulder arms, or perhaps bowls, for the weekly game of nominated three-bowl pairs.
Looking back to the days when perhaps only 12 players would turn out on a Wednesday, the transformation has been remarkable.
Congratulations went to the Wednesday organisers for the sterling work they have done in transforming Wednesday Social Bowls.
This week’s winners were Norm Windebank and Tony Durkin, who shared first prize of $100 and a drink card each. The runners-up prize of $60 was won by Laureen Smith and Col Withers.
The losing rink consolation prize of $40 went to Jill and Ron Lamson.
The first Lucky Number raffle prize of $20 was won by Karen Guymer, while the second Lucky Number prize of $10 was claimed by Les Wilson.
Friday Social Bowls
Grey, scudding skies and cooler weather resulted in a slightly lighter-than-usual turnout of players last Friday, May 8.
Despite the cooler conditions, the greens were running well and games were played across both greens in the north-south direction.
Finding the conditions on rink 12, almost in Siberia, to their liking were Michael Szarbo and Ian Keat, who won first prize of $100. The runners-up, playing on rink 4, were Judy Leeson and Allan Goudge, who shared $90.
The losing rink consolation prize of $40 was shared by Blue and Joy Watt, who played on rink 5.
The first Lucky Number prize of $15 and a drink card went to Noel Loft, who won with number 43. The second Lucky Number prize of $15 went to Joy Watt, who won with number 21.
YMGCR Bowls Section AGM – Part 2
Last week, readers were introduced to the YMGCR Bowls Committee for 2026/2027 and those committee members retiring from service were acknowledged and thanked.
Members attending the AGM also had the task of endorsing nominees for the Ladies and Men’s Match Committees, along with the Weekend and Mid-Week Selection Committees.
The members of the Ladies Match Committee for 2026/2027 are: Vicki Withers (Chairperson), Robyn Forge, Judy Leeson, Lynne Baxter.
The Men’s Match Committee for 2026/2027 comprises: Chris Horne (Chairperson), Bruce Davie, Gavin Borwick, Les Balfour, Chris Morrissy, David Irvine
The Weekend Selection Panel members for 2026/2027 are: Greg Fisher, Greg Green, Bruce Davie, Anne Miles, Ray Brown.

Two additional Mid-Week Selectors are still required, and the Bowls Committee, together with the Mid-Week Selectors, will approach members seeking expressions of interest in joining the Selection Panel.
Sincere thanks were also extended to those members retiring from the 2025/2026 Match and Selection Committees. The club is only as strong as its members’ willingness to volunteer and serve on committees, and their contributions have helped make YMGCR a far better club.
Those retiring are: Ladies Match Committee: Jill Lamson and Carolyn Boston, Weekend Selection Panel: Ray Irvine and Gary Presnell, Mid-Week Selection Panel: Anne Miles, Shirley Hummel and Ron Lamson
Thank you to one and all.
Next week’s report will look at the club’s competition winners for 2025/2026. Until then, good bowling.
Tungamah Bowls Club
It has been lovely weather for bowls, with the greens running at their best and no pennant matches to be played.

The club will then go into recess until the warmer weather arrives and the bowls season begins again.
The club continues to acknowledge and appreciate the businesses that support it, especially the long-term sponsors already recognised for their ongoing contribution.
A warm welcome is also extended to the new faces who have come on board through fence signage and other avenues of support. Every contribution helps bring the club’s new clubhouse a little closer to becoming a reality.
